The Parent's Guide to Down Syndrome (Review and Giveaway)

Disclaimer: I received a free PDF copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

If you have received a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis, or are a new parent to a baby with Down syndrome, there is a just-released book written just for you. (The book is also worthwhile for any parent of a child with Down syndrome to peruse as it contains information through the adult years.)

The Parent's Guide to Down Syndrome: Advice, Information, Inspiration, and Support for Raising Your Child from Diagnosis Through Adulthood is co-authored by Jen Jacob (author, co-founder and VP of Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network) and Mardra Sikora (author, speaker, motivator, and advocate).

This comprehensive, up-to-date, organized and easy-to-read guide is full of information, resources (including links to all websites), and support. It is easy to navigate the different stages you, and your child with Down syndrome, will find yourselves. The book is short (under 300 pages) so it is easily 'digestible' while still providing a lot of valuable information.

- Part One covers "The Basics" of what Down syndrome is, receiving a prenatal diagnosis, and receiving a postnatal diagnosis at birth

- Part Two covers "The Journey" with chapters focused on newborn, baby/toddler years, primary/middle school, teenage years, and adult years

- Part Three lets parents know "You Are Not Alone" and covers support and research and a world-wide network connecting families who have a loved one with Down syndrome

Throughout the book there are plenty of quotes and stories and experiences from numerous parents on this journey, but more importantly there are the voices of those who have Down syndrome giving their perspective on their lives and advice to parents.

Mardra put together some great information on the making of this book and things to keep in mind, such as this: "we worked hard to educate the publishers about people first language and its importance – there are a few missteps within the pages. These editors worked hard to quickly tackle a subject new to them while helping us get a lotof information shared in short order. The effort resulted in overall helpful materials for parents (and others) with a few slipups that I ask be forgiven, like any other proofreading error, and will be adjusted on future print editions, and hopefully sooner on Kindle formats."

You can also find more information on this book at this link.

I've been on my own parenting journey for 12 years now so a lot of the information/resources etc aren't new to me (which is fine as it's most beneficial for new parents), but I would have appreciated having this book after Kayla was born. While the information that comes with a diagnosis can be, and is, overwhelming, this book makes it easy to skim through and pick out what is relevant to what you need at that time of your life.

And our journey isn't over, by far. We will be entering the teen years and that, of course, will quickly be followed by the adult years. I enjoyed reading those chapters as they give me a glimpse into what to expect with my own child.

Don't just take my word for the great resource that is this book; you can read what other bloggers are saying about the book, too.

For the giveaway. There is a Grand Prize giveaway, and then there is a single book giveaway (this one is just from my blog.)

To enter to win the book from my blog just leave a comment (making sure I can reach you) saying what your current go-to resource is for Down syndrome (if you have one). I will pick a winner via random.org in a week.

To enter the Grand Prize which includes the book (of course), other book resources, a totebag, stickers, and a free registration for this year's 321eConference (all valued at over $200) just enter the simple and quick Rafflecopter:

Treasure Hunt Book Review and Giveaway

I recently read and reviewed a book with my kids by Lady Jenniviere called Treasure Hunt. I received this book for free, opinions are mine and my children's.

Treasure Hunt is book four of six in the Lady Jenniviere's Quill Series. We haven't read the previous books but had no problems reading this book without reading the previous books; I think they are independent of each other and you won't miss out on information by not reading them in order.

Lady Jenniviere's books are geared toward the preteen/middle school age group Each of her books contain important messages that she wants kids to know such as "...life isn't always wrapped up in a neatly packaged happy ending." Her books encourage readers to use their imagination and she wants her books to show that "Life isn't always black and white...books illustrate the beauty of the gray parts."

Treasure Hunt is about a boy, Chase, who is looking forward to summer vacation on Sanibel Island; where he goes every summer to visit his grandparents. This summer he is especially excited about because he found an old book about the island that has a map of treasure buried long ago by pirates. He is determined to figure out the map and find this long-lost buried treasure and claim the riches.

Along this journey he encounters unexpected creatures who become his friends: a seagull, dolphin, alligator, turtles, and a mermaid. The imagination used to bring these friends to life really interested my kids, especially my 7-year old.

Chase learns several lessons throughout the book as they travel the island looking for the treasure, and in the end he finds something more valuable than jewels or gold.

I found this to story to be a light-hearted, adventurous, wholesome family book interspersed with life lessons. It was a refreshing read and I anticipate reading the other books in the series with my kids, too. Lucas said he really liked the book and characters, Kayla gave it a thumbs-up.

I have 3 copies of this e-book to giveaway. The winners will receive a code that they can use to get the book for free from Smashwords which can be downloaded to an e-reader.

Please leave a comment, making sure I can contact you, for a chance to win a copy. Winners will be chosen by Random.org.

Update on Beautiful Eyes Contest

Remember the picture I submitted of Kayla for the Prevent Blindness America's Most Beautiful Eyes Contest? The public voting period ending on Sep 30th. The top winners from each state were named and Kayla won for the state of SC!

Now the next round will be determined by a panel of judges selected by Prevent Blindness America. They will chose 5 from all the state winners ... then a panel of 3 celebrity judges will narrow those 5 down to the top 3. Winners will be announced Nov 19.

Our local paper did a nice write up of Kayla being the state winner: The Eyes Have it for Local Girl.

And she is even at the top of the front page on the hard copy edition of the paper (I wasn't expecting that!):

You can see a list of all the state winners here.

I Will Not Be Broken (book giveaway)

Updated: Survivor Corps criticizes Russian for using cluster bombs on Georgia civilians. Check out this link for more information on what Survivor Corps saying about this.

I just started reading the book I Will Not Be Broken: 5 Steps To Overcoming A Life Crisis by Jerry White. Mr White is the founder of Survivor Corps; he lost a leg in a landmine accident in 1984.

Jerry has interviewed thousands of people around the world - from the famous (Lance Armstong, Nelson Mendela) to the not-so-famous. They come from all walks of life to share their stories of how tragedy struck their lives and what they learned from it.

The premise of the book is that tragedy will strike all of us at one time or another. We don't know when or how, but we'll all endure a moment that divides our lives into before and after the event happened. What we decide to do with the after affects how we live our lives out. It's about attitude and choosing to live, to not only survive, but to thrive and get past it.

Through his own experiences and those of others he's talked to, Jerry shares what he, and they, have learned to survive. The 5 steps to surviving are Face Facts, Chose Life, Reach Out, Get Moving, Give Back.

We can all learn something from each of the survivors in this book; I'm finding it fascinating to read how they've overcome adversity. Even though the lessons learned are about moving past a tragedy, I think they can be applied to general life lessons.

Lance Armstrong sums it up nicely with this quote, "Jerry White brings his insight and experience to bear expertly for those facing life's unexpected challenges. He embodies the spirit of survivorship."

If you're interested in reading this book leave a comment and I'll pick a winner sometime next week; in the mean time several chapters of the book are available for free download.

If you would like more chances to win other books check out Overwhelmed With Joy's Pay It Forward Book Exchange.

Killlashandra from Full Time In NM, Julie from Gigi's Little Blog, and Karen from Karen's Ramblings have all given me award.

Xandra, from Heart of Service has created this fun award. Here is what she says:"it's for blogs that I must read every day without fail . . . They make you laugh, cry, think and feel connected every time you read a post. They give you a thrill as you see them loading into your browser and you get an equally satisfying thrill when you see that they have commented on your blog."

Thank you ladies! I'm honored you consider my blog a "daily dose!"

Karen from Karen's Ramblings passed on the

This award was originally created by Mica at Garb-oodles Soup. Mica says: "I have met so many lovely and very talented ladies here in Blogdom, what more can I do or say to express my humbled heart to each, than to give all my Dearest Readers and Friends a special award filled with Love. So, Spread The Love dear ones, Spread The Love to those you love. Accept my award in which I have specially designed and share it with others. Enjoy the day." See here for the full details of this Award.

I know it's probably "cheating" but I'm passing both of these awards on to all the bloggers I read - because really, if I read your blog then you're a "daily dose" and I'd like to "spread the love" to each of you!

Pay It Forward Book Exchange

This month I'm participating in the Pay It Forward Book Exchange hosted by Overwhelmed With Joy.

A few months ago I won The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler from Kathleen Marie's Pay It Forward contest. I am finally getting around to "paying it forward" and passing it along to someone else.

I had previously won Dream Language: the prophetic power of dreams, revelations, and the spirit of wisdom by James W. and Michal Ann Goll from a book giveaway Karen had and now I'd like to "pay it forward" as well.

Finally, from my own bookshelf I'm including another book in the book exchange - Summer Sisters by Judy Blume.

Just leave a comment and you'll be entered to win any of the books ... after you've had a chance to read the book just host your own "Pay It Forward Book Exchange" and pass on the book to someone else.

I'll announce the winners next Wednesday.

Monday Mish Mash

There are a few odds and ends I'm just going to put all together in this post!

First: Leticia from Cause of our Joy has organized the first-ever Down Syndrome Carnival with some great posts from parents from all over. I'm honored to be a part of this!

Second: A couple of contests coming up. 5 Minutes for Mom is giving away a Comfy Easy PC System. It's a uniquely designed keyboard with software for ages 1-5.

Overwhelmed is looking to start a home-based business and is having a Name That Business Contest contest - go see what you could win!

Third: Some Bloggy Awards!

Janeen and Annie have both given me the . I don't consider myself a very courageous person and don't think I've done anything out of the ordinary to deserve this award, but thank you so much ladies, for thinking of me as courageous!

According to the rules this is to be awarded to "Those bloggers who are battling, or have battled, with physical or mental illness, those who are survivors of abuse, poverty, or who have overcome other challenges in life. Those who serve in the military, or work/volunteer in dangerous situations in order to provide a service, or to help others. This award is for the strong, brave, and courageous."

So I'm passing this on to these bloggers dealing with medical issues:
Amy from Laughing Through The Tears - she's been through a lot of medical issues and it's been extremely difficult for her to get around. She just recently had a hip replacement and is due for her other hip replacement next month. She always sounds so upbeat and positive!

Dori from The Ups & Downs of our Life - she has been through so many different doctors this past year trying to find out what is going on with excruciating back pain she's had; I know it's been frustrating for her, but she's hanging in there!

I know Annie already gave Tammy and Parker this award, but I couldn't not give it to her as well; I'm sure she'll get this more than once! Parker recently had surgery for a trach and they are now learning to adjust to that and all the ins and outs that go along with caring for someone with a trach. They are both courageous!

Laura from This Is Me - she's a single mom to Aaron who has a unique set of his own medical issues and history, to include back surgery. She handles all of this on her own and with such grace and a positive attitude!

For the military families: Andrea from Sgt & Mrs Hub, Eden from Once Upon A Dream, Jenna from A Joyful Journey, Kacey from The Amazing Ella Grace, Sandra from Diary of a SAHM, Carrie from My Lil' Corner of the World, Michelle from Snippets, Michelle from Learning How To Deal, and Alycia from Where My Treasures Are.

and to Sarah from The Barkers (her husband is in law enforcement) and Jennifer from Pinwheels (her husband is a volunteer firefighter).

Karen gave me the Nice Matters Award. Thanks so much Karen, you are someone I would have definitely given this award to!
I'm passing this one on to the following bloggers I've had the privilege to meet in person (and can attest to their niceness!): Mayhem & Miracles, Gentle Retreat, Overwhelmed With Joy, Sweetest Cherry in an Apple Pie and A Penny For Your Thoughts
I could give this to many more bloggers, but I'm all linked out for today!

Jennifer gave me the Rockin' Girl Blogger Award. I know I've passed this on to several bloggers before, and I'm not even sure who hasn't received this one yet...so if you haven't - considered yourself awarded! Thanks Jennifer!

I think that about sums it all up!
