It's Finally Done

After mentioning, over 2 months ago, that Lucas' hair was kinda long I finally went and got it cut. It really was looking scraggly over his ears and in the front. I could even put barrettes in it...he would have been a cute girl.

He kept almost perfectly still while she was cutting his hair. When she got too close to the front of him he put his head down a little and kept his eyes down as if saying "I'm not going to look at you, I'm not watching what you're doing to me" and he kept his brow furrowed the whole time.

I need to find the picture of Kayla's first hair cut - because I think she's making almost this same face - it's like they are both a little teed off at getting a haircut!

I think it's a little too short and she made it kinda choppy in the front...and I miss running my fingers through the hair that was at the nape of his neck. It's not silky smooth anymore...he doesn't look like my baby anymore.

That first haircut always makes them look like such toddlers doesn't it!?

Special Exposure Wednesday

The past several days Kayla has been all about the Little People...here they were all sitting around the table having birthday cake.

Taking a little quiet time break

And proof that they actually do play together sometimes. Nicely. And without adult intervention.

Note to self: Must keep camera downstairs so moments like these aren't captured with the cell phone camera!

Fighting Cancer Again

Ashlyn is a little girl who, in her short life, has already fought and won her battle with AML. Unfortunately she has recently been diagnosed with another type of cancer - ALL. Having cancer once is bad enough, but now she has to go through this all over again.

Carey, mom to Chelsea - who is also a cancer survivor - is having a fundraiser to help Ashlyn's family with the cost of gas from all the trips to the hospital they will be making. For every mascara that is purchased, $5 will be donated to their gas fund.

Please keep Ashlyn and her family in your prayers as they go through this battle once again.

A Good Day, But...

We had a wonderful day in La Plata celebrating the 4th.

It was a watermelon-rolling,

(Lucas getting his sticker)

Flag-waving,

Watermelon-eating,

body-painting,

fireworks-watching kind of day.

But I definitely felt the absence of Joe's presence. I tried to take plenty of pictures so he could see what the kids experienced, but I hate that he's missing out on so much...holidays are hard that way.

I'm glad the kids had a blast though and Kayla enjoyed the fireworks. The first thing she said this morning when she woke up was,"more fireworks!" and I said "oh they're all done." She replied with, "I go ask Mema ok."

Fourth Flashbacks

It seems weird to not be celebrating the 4th of July back at Holloman AFB, NM...considering we've spent the past several years there!

Geesh was she really that tiny!?

Happy 4th honey - we'll miss watching the fireworks with you this year!

Babies - More or Less

I've been thinking about babies lately. And whether I want any more; although Joe and I are 99.99% sure we're done with two. It's just so hard to make that decision a final one though, isn't it?

There are a few bloggers I follow, and a couple ladies in the Moms Club, who are expecting. When I went to the Mom's Banquet and saw the moms with their cute pregnant bellies it made me ... wistful I guess.

Wistful because I loved being pregnant. Despite the usual aches and pains (and it was really bad with Lucas) I had pretty uneventful and easy pregnancies. No morning sickness. No weird cravings, no cravings at all actually. No swelling. I enjoyed being pregnant and feeling that new life growing inside of me. It's hard to think of that not happening again, of not experiencing that again.

But to be honest, last year was tough. Post-partum depression, endless crying (Lucas and me!), sleepless nights, exhaustion, constant nursing, Joe' deployment looming down on us...it all took it's toll on me and I was not a very happy person to be around.

Last year was probably the most challenging year of the 8 years we've been married. I was stressed, had no energy for anything, felt like running away, no patience, little things set me off - and Joe took the brunt of that. Because who else was I going to take it out on? Definitely not the kids, but the one person who would take it and still love me anyway. (Sorry honey!)

As much as I enjoyed being pregnant, I just don't think I can go through that again - the newborn/infant stage. I know my limits, my personality, and what I can handle. I'm already an (admittedly) inpatient person and having two kids, one with special needs even, hasn't given me more patience (I wish I was one of those parents who say "having a child with special needs has taught me to be more patient" cause I sure missed the lesson on that one!). I stress too easily, I'm not calm and laid-back and I don't think I would be a very good parent to 3 kids.

I really admire the moms I see who have more, or are having more, than 2 children. I wish I could do it, I wish I had it in me, but I just don't think I do...and that makes me a little sad...and a little wistful.

Because we do make some darn cute kids!

Kayla - Just Another Special K

If you read Renee's blog then you'll understand the title of my post; if you're not familiar with her blog it's titled Life With My Special Ks. Renee and her husband, Frank, have 4 kids and all their names start with K (and they are adopting a girl whom they have already given a "K" name to) s0 - Kayla fits right in with their family! (Except her name isn't 7 letters, but we'll let that slide.)

Renee's husband is in the Army and next year he'll be leaving for his 4th (ugh!) deployment to Afghanistan.

Their daughter, Kennedy, is 10 months younger than Kayla and also has Down syndrome. So we have a bit in common and when I heard they were going to be in DC this weekend I hoped it would work out that we could meet up.

As you can see, it worked out! Yesterday we met them at the National Museum of Natural History.

Keeghan, Kassidy, Kayla, and Lucas, who sadly doesn't have a "K" name :)

Kameron and Kennedy joined the group and I'm sure you can imagine how hard it was to get all 6 kids sitting together nicely and looking at the camera!

We tried though

I love the expression on Kennedy's face here - it looks like Kayla is reading a map of where we're going and Kennedy is thinking "yeah right!"

Instant friends

Kayla was so excited, she kept saying "Kennedy! Over here! I show you!"

And the mommas with the girls who brought us together!

One last picture before we had to leave

Renee it was great meeting your whole family! Have a safe trip back home!

Bill of Rights for Parents of Kids With Special Needs

I'm totally stealing this from Ellen, but it's ok because I asked permission. I found myself nodding my head at so many of these and just wanted to share it here too.

We, the parents, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure tranquility (and sanity) and promote the general welfare of our families, do ordain and establish this Bill of Rights.
* We have the right to expect our kids to be seen for who they are as individuals, not as labels or diagnoses.
* We have a right to trust our instincts about our kids and realize that experts don't always know best.
* We have a right to ignore the remarks, questions and stares and not give explanations or excuses for why our children are the way they are.
* We have a right to choose alternative therapies for our kids.
* We have a right to roll our eyes straight out of our heads when we encounter certain mothers who brag nonstop that their kids are the smartest students/best athletes ever.
* We have a right to wonder “What if…” every so often.
* We have a right to play aimlessly with our children. Not for therapeutic or educational purposes—just for fun.
* We have a right to blast Bruce Springsteen/Tom Petty/Any Rocker, down a glass of Pinot Grigio, get a pedicure, go out with the girls or do all of the aforementioned at once if that's what it takes to avoid burnout.
* We have a right to react to people’s ignorance in whatever way we feel necessary.
* We have a right to not always have our child be the poster child for his/her disability and some days be just a child.
* We have a right to go through the grieving process and realize we may never quite be "over it." * We have the right to give our kids chores. Even better if they can learn to make breakfast in bed for us.
* We have a right to stretch the truth when we fail to do the exercises the therapist asked us to do this week because we were too darn tired or overwhelmed.
* We have a right to have yet more Pinot Grigio.
* We have a right to fire any doctor or therapist who's negative, unsupportive or who generally says suck-y things.
* We have a right to tell family and friends that everything may not be OK—at least not how they mean it, anyway.
* We have a right to hope for an empty playground so we don’t have to look into another child’s eyes and answer the question, “What’s wrong with him?”
* We have a right to bawl on the way back from the playground, the birthday party, the mall or anyplace where our children’s challenges become glaringly obvious in the face of all the other kids doing their typical-development things.
* We have the right to give our children consequences for their behavior. They may be “special” but they can still be a royal pain in the butt.
* We have a right to take a break from Googling therapies, procedures, medicine and treatments for our kids to research upcoming concerts, exotic teas or anything not related to our children’s disabilities.
* We have a right to talk about how great our kids are when people don’t get it.
* We have the right to not always behave as inspirational icons who never complain or gripe about the sometimes awful realities of raising a child with special needs.
* We have a right to expect quality services for our children not just when they’re infants, preschoolers and elementary school age, but when they’re in older grades and adults, too.
* We have a right to adequate funding for those services and to not have to kick, scream or endure a wait for them.
* We have a right to get tired of people saying, as they give that sympathy stare, "I don't know how you do it."
* We have a right to wish that sometimes things could be easier.
* We have a right to cheer like crazy anytime our children amaze us—or weep like lunatics.
* We have a right to push, push and push some more to make sure our children are treated fairly by the world.
(Compiled in honor of her little boy, Max, and all of our beautiful children, on June 17, 2009.)

Special Exposure Wednesday

5 Minutes for Special Needs
We recently went to Watkins Regional Park and Kayla absolutely enjoyed riding the Chesapeak Carousel. I'm surprised this picture came out as well as it did on the camera phone and with me holding on to Lucas on the other horse.

Reading Accomplishment

When you have a child with any kind of special needs, or if they struggle in any area, you get a little emotional when they accomplish something they've been struggling with, or working on.

Although Kayla's known several site words for quite awhile now she's not really been able to read them in books. There is too much to look at on the page with the pictures and other words. Too much going on for her to concentrate on picking out individual words.

She's finally starting to point at the words individually in the books instead of just sliding her finger all over the page. She's starting to read and I can't tell you the excitement I feel watching her. I had tears in my eyes the first time she was reading words in a book several weeks ago.

I love that she is enjoying reading too; I hear her reading her books when I'm putting Lucas to bed. This girl of mine...she makes me proud...she does my heart good.
