One!

Dear Lucas,

You are ONE year old today; unbelievable!

It's a bittersweet celebration for sure, with your daddy not being able to be here with us.

Some day when you're older you'll understand where he was and why he had to be gone. He might not have been able to be with us physically, but thanks to modern technology he was able to be there to help you celebrate. We set up the webcams and he joined in on singing "Happy Birthday" to you...


and he was able to watch you tentatively go after your cake.


I thought after your first taste of cake/frosting a couple of weeks ago you would be all over that cake, but you seemed unsure of it again. Finally you went at it and covered your face in frosting appropriate for a one year old celebration!


You enjoyed opening your gifts more so then you did a few months ago at Christmas. Then you were just content to walk around with a ripped piece of paper in your hand and paid no attention to the fact that you could rip more paper off. This time you were all about ripping that paper off and seeing what was underneath all the wrapping.




Your sister thought it was like at Christmas and she needed to help you open every single gift; good thing you didn't seem to mind.


So what was this last month of your "babyhood" like (although can we really say 'babyhood' when you started walking just before 9 months?)

This last month brought a big change for us when we said goodbye to your daddy; I know you'll miss his presence in your life, and we're prepared for you to not realize who he is when you see him again, but I'll make sure to show you his pictures frequently and hopefully you'll be more interested in the webcam in a few more months! Just know that he loves you very much.


You're finally getting a third tooth - a little nub is forming on the top right - about time!

Your favorite food group is - bread! You do love you some bread and you know when others are eating it. Forget what's on your tray, you reach out "uh uh uh" trying to get us to give you some of that bread!

You give the sweetest hugs - to our legs! You'll just walk up to us and rest your head on a leg and wrap your arms around, then do this "tap tap tap" thing with your hands.

When we ask "where's your head" you'll usually put your hand up to your head.

You refuse to learn sign language. I think you're perfectly capable of doing it, because you copy us on so many other things.

When you're in the mood you'll oblige us with open-mouth kisses...I just wish you weren't so busy to stop and give me kisses more often! You're always on the go.

Your favorite toys are the Little People school bus, the Leap Frog Learning Drum, and the wooden frog pull-toy. You're finally starting to take more of an interest in books (especially if they have different textures to touch on the pages).

You like any kind of containers that you can put things in and out of...including the trashcan! We need to have a childproof lock for everything! You amaze me all the time with the things you're able to figure out - we only show you something once and you remember it. You like to watch what everyone is doing and you have such a look of concentration when you're trying to do things.

Yesterday during lunch we were sitting there and laughing about something and then you piped up with a fake laugh and said "ha ha!" - I managed to catch some of it on video:
