Mommy Talk

This week's question from Mommy Talk:

Baby Names on your list...What name did you chose, and why?

For as long as I can remember I have always liked the name Kayla. Ok I got it from that soap opera (Days of our Lives) and the character Kayla Brady (you'd be surprised how many hits I get from searches with any variation of Kayla Days hairstyle...guess she's still as popular now as she was 20 years ago!)

When we started going through the baby name book I immediately put Kayla down. It would be in the top and luckily Joe agreed he liked it too.

Here are some of the girl names we had: Lorelai (yes from another TV show - Gilmore Girls), Amber, Caitlyn/Caitlin, Leah, Renee/Renae, Ashley, Catherine, Serena

It was so hard finding boy names for our list though! Nothing I looked at just "felt" right - maybe it was because I didn't want to put a lot of thought into it since I wanted a girl!

We had 2 names, yep, just 2 names that eventually made it on the list. I liked Tyler and Joe liked Ethan. If Kayla had been a boy the name most likely would have been Ethan Tyler, because that had a better flow to it than Tyler Ethan. So there you go!

Michelle, you and I are so much alike! I, too, fell in love with the name Kayla because of a certain character on Days. My hubby didn't want me to name our daughter after a soap opera character (which btw is where I got my name) and he said he didn't really like the name because everyone at the time was naming their girl's Kayla. Well, heehee, little did I know that we would be adopting a little girl named Kayla!! So I got my Kayla after all :o) Have you ever told us Kayla's middle name? My Kayla is Noel because she was born around Christmas! Have a great day!

I LOVE Lorelei on Gilmore Girls. That is one character that just cracks me up! =) I love the name Kayla, its so beautiful. For some reason, my husband and I can only agree on uni-sex names for our girl names. Poor things!

Omigosh I SO remember Kayla and Patch on DOOL!! hehe I was a faithful DOOL fan for many years. Another soap opera I use to watch was Another World...one of the character's name was MacKenzie Corey...that's where I got the name for my youngest son...Corey...lol! If I would have had a little girl, her name would have been Tara Lee...taken after the plantation on Gone With The Wind...Tara. xox

I love children's names! OK, if I'd had more children, names I had on my list were. For a girl. Eva, Hannah, Lily, Ruby, Sophie. For a boy - well that always comes harder to me, but I still like shortened names like Sam, Tom, Ben. Being a real name buff my children have 3 names each. I will leave of their first names here, but my son's middle names are John Isaac (lots of Johns in the family - it had to be done!) and my daughter Jorja (CSI!) Bronia.

There is a story to Bronia. I read a book in 1978 (I was but a child!!) and it was called "The Silver Sword" there were 2 sisters and 1 brother from Poland (set in WWII) Bronia was a little girl of much courage and character and I fell in love with the name. I've not met anyone else with that name to date.

Kayla is the perfect name for your little Kayla.

Names are a funny thing ... after reading all those names, none fit your Kayla like *Kayla*. Just from what I've read and seen from her pictures, she's a true *Kayla*.

My daughters are Libby Ashyln and Sadie Taylor ... the new baby will be Levi Allen ... I couldn't imagine my girls with any other name now that they're here. :o)

Grrrr, LOL, that's Ashlyn not Ashyln ... can't even spell my own daughter's name, LOL!

My first name is very common and so was my maiden name. I tried really hard with my children to choose names that were not completely off the wall but so common that every other child had the same name. My oldest and only son is Gabriel. It means "Man of God" and my husband and I just loved the name and the meaning. My 1st dd is Hannah, meaning "Grace of God". It's a bit more common than I care for, but when she was born, I had never heard of anyone named Hannah. (That's what my mom says about "Karen"!) My youngest is Holly. Honestly, it was the only name that my dh and I could agree on. We cold have had a dozen boys and not run out of names.

I think Kayla is the perfect name for her. I dont think she looks like anything else! I wanted to tell you that I looked at your blog at school, and it looked great, so it does have something to do with my computer/server.

Lorelei was on our list when we were pregnant with Sydney. It almost made the cut!! I had a ton of other names I liked that were more unique, but Gary hated them all! lol
He named Delaney, which I LOVE!! (It's from a Jimmy Buffett song!)
And McKenna was just so beautiful and unique that once I heard it Iknew it was the one I wanted!!
It's amazing how popular Kayla got after Days of our Lives!!!

Well - I think Kayla is a perfect fit. It's really a difficult job - this picking out of names. I knew exactly what name I wanted for my first son, but the second one had me stymied. My husband and I were still discussing names on the way to the hospital!!

Kayla is a good pick for your daughter. I picked my names from a baby book with the girls. my son was named after his dad. I liked the name katie but when katie was born the nurse asked me and everyone was naming their girl that. so i looked in the baby book and saw Katriel. It's pronounce k tree L. I thought it sounded pretty and different. I also like the meaning behind it. it means my crown is God. I choose Tiffany b/c it was the only name we could agree on. He picked out some really not so good names for a girl.
love,
mimi

When we were trying to think of names for Rhi we couldn't agree on anything. Then just one day in the car Fleetwood Mac was playing and I told Shannon- that's a nice name; it even sounds like yours and he was like- yeah, that's a nice name and suddenly we finally agreed on one name. You already know that I chose Michelle as her middle name because it was close to Shannon's middle name- Michael, but a teensy bit was because of you, too. Nate was a little different. Shannon and I always both liked the name Liam. (which woulda been cute- Rhi, Gi and Li) but then I had the miscarriage and it just didn't feel right to keep the name for another baby, ya know? So, when I was pregnant with Nate we were watching a movie and there was a character named Nate (Short for Nathan) and I liked the nickname Nate, but I liked the longer version Nathaniel better. So, that's what we named him. It's funy where people get names for their children. Weird how you hear and name and suddenly you know- that's the one.
Good post. I like this mommy talk.

My eldest daughter is Timoni Tim-ah-nee), from Acts 6 in the Bible, the disciple Timon - which is a Greek name. I played with how to spell it and came up with this name 6 years before she was even born. I have no idea just how it came about but I thought about putting a y or ie on the end but ended up with just an i. I guess I thought it was cuter that way. I also like Saphora (spelled many ways, Moses wife) and Timoni thanks me to this day that I didn't name her that.

I also liked Tara (the Irish in me) and the movie Gone With the Wind so my second daughter was Tara. If a boy she would have been Luke. I always loved Luke so when Luke came along I was thrilled and if he would have been a girl he would have been Tessa. I have no idea why I like that name.

Joey was a hard one but we both agreed that his name is Joseph but called Joey and he would have been a Kristine or a Tessa. I am sure Tessa would have won out.

Luke is named after Larry Dad, Luke Edward and Joey after my Dad - Joseph Allen.

My sisters and I all have middle names that begin with an M so I did the same with my girls, Timoni Marie and Tara Marisa and when my grand-daughter was born Tara also kept the tradition naming her Alexys Marie. Sweet!

My sister's name is Amber--and I love Kayla--it's a beautiful name. I never had a hard time picking out names. I even have some picked out now--in case of a miracle!!

To be honest, I never really loved the name Kayla, until I saw pictures of your little girl. Now I like it! I associate it with her - darling and joyful.

Okay, you've opened a can of worms. I love baby names!

My favorite girl name has been Talbot (Tally for short) since I was eighteen. I know it's unusual, but I just love it more than any other name in the world. If we have a girl, she'll be Talbot Caroline. I also love Bettina and Jillian.

We chose Nicholas Lane for our little one. Other options were Scott, Jack, Andrew, Alexander, and Patrick.

Dori (Aviva's mommy) said...

I always loved Aviva that was our first name and our 2nd girls name was Kayla Grace. IF I had a boy it was Ari Michael.

I wanted to name my boys Michael or Mikhail or Mikey, even Miguel (any variation of my name). If they were girls and had my way, I would have named them Michelle.

My wife turned me down.

Kayla is the perfect Name :) I have always liked Abigale but mike hates that name :p Nathaniel was pretty much decided on and Drennan after Mike's side.

Kayla was meant to be Kayla...it just suits her so well!

We got Jackson's name from Steel Magnolias! We always agreed on that name so during the ultrasound when Dr. C. said, "Boy!" I said, "Jack." He wrote it down in my chart and we referred to him as Jack for the remainder of my pregnancy!

I have about 50 names picked out for our next one(s). It's one of my favorite past-times!

With my son we had a hard time picking out names, finally about a month before he was born we had it narrowed down to Hunter or Lucas, and we decided on Hunter Jacob. If he was a girl he would have been Savannah. With our daughter we immediatly agreed on Ella Grace, and that is the only name we picked out boy or girl, it was just meant to be : )
I love the name Kayla, isn't it funny how names suit the kids!

Those are all lovely name.. but Kayla really is such a Kayla no?

I love Kayla--it suits her perfectly. Boy names are harder. If L. had been a girl he would have been Caroline Margaret. Not sure if that will suit the new baby. We shall see!
