One World One Heart

In yesterday's post I mentioned the One World One Heart Giveaway. Go read all about what it is and see the long list of participants in this contest, then come back and read why I'm participating and what I'm giving away.

Back already? Ok. Bloggers will be announcing their individual contest winners on March 21st (or as close to that date as possible.) March 21st is significant to me for another reason so I just felt like I should participate.

What is so special about that date? Last year Down Syndrome International declared March 21st as "World Down Syndrome Day." March 21st = 3/21. 3/21 also = 3 copies of the 21st chromosome which is Trisomy 21 which is more commonly known as Down syndrome. Pretty neat huh?

This year's theme is "Celebrating Diversity", to continue creating awareness about Down syndrome and promote acceptance of diversity.

So in sticking with that theme and creating awareness, what better prize could I give away than a copy of the book, yep you guessed it, Gifts, Mothers Reflect on How Children With Down Syndrome Enrich Their Lives.

Now it won't be this exact book as the 2nd release edition isn't available until July, but I do have an extra copy of the first edition that was released.

Some people might be asking themselves what they would want with a book about kids with Down syndrome if they don't have a child with Down syndrome. I'll tell you! Yes the premise of the book is mothers sharing their stories of raising their child with Down syndrome and how they've enriched our lives, but it's also about much more than that. It's about love, acceptance, and just mothering. You'll probably relate to some parts of different stories, some feelings, you'll laugh and cry and smile at each wonderful and precious gift of life.

But don't take my word for it! Ask Chelle - she is reading this book and doesn't have a child with Down syndrome - go ask her why she decided to order it and how she is enjoying the book!

Oh yeah, for those who are new to my blog - I also have a story in the book!

So how to win a copy of this book? Just leave a comment on this post and you're name will be entered in my drawing! Easy enough!

Good luck!

Well, since I ordered the book before all the publishing problems I don't have a copy yet. I think Much More than a Mom had a great idea about donating the book to the library. If I win I will donate it to my kids' school library. But I'll read it first. Is that wrong?

I've been reading your sight for a few months now. What better time to come out of hiding! Your sweet daughter and fun posts have been an inspiration. I'd love to read the book and then pass it on to the library too!

You don't have to convince me - I know I'd love the book. I'm so proud of you for having a story in it. That is so great. I think maybe you should also give away a box of tissues with the book. I have a hard time getting through stories like that without tears - good tears.

A good book recommendation and a drawing? Too good an opportunity to miss. Mind you I won't be 'that' sorry if I'm not one of the chosen few as all this blogging means that my nightstand is as tall as a skyscraper with books to read.
Best wishes

That looks like a great book! I'd love to read your story! If I don't win, I'll have to get myself a copy, and a copy for my ex-neighbor that is due to have a little girl with DS next month. She emailed me as soon as she found out, and it has been such a blessing to be able to "educate" her about what a little blessing is about to enter their lives!

Well...this is sure to be a popular post! :0) As someone who works very closely with kids with disabilities and their parents, this would be a great read! Not to mention the mommy part, anything pertaining to that leaves me in puddles! I'll be crossing my fingers too! Thanks so much for sharing - you're a great advocate!

PICK ME PICK ME!!!! LOL! That is so precious that mothers actually took the time to write their stories so other people who don't have contact with people with down syndrome, they can still see how they are so normal and just like the rest of us... wait no they are deffinately more beautiful! I hope the winner enjoys the book!

Oh Michelle.. I have been trying to get a copy of that book since it came out ...I ordered it and had it cancelled when they changed publishers :p Can I enter your draw for it ? Sometimes being up in Canada sucks :p

I need to order this book for my mother in law! I don't even have it for myself yet though! I look forward to reading your story - whenever I do get my hands on a copy!

Anonymous said...

I have the book and I adore reading the stories. Parenthood is parenthood and these children like all children are so precious!

Anonymous said...

Maybe I'm lucky :-). I agree with you, books like these are not only for mothers or parents with children with Down Syndrome. People can learn a lot from them and they help people to realize that their "knowledge" about DS is mostly prejudice.

Dori (Aviva's mommy) said...

I ordered the book to add to my collection...especially for when I start teaching.

HUGS!

Would LOVE to read this; I am a mom to 3 boys, 2 with special needs (one has Asperger's and the other is Bipolar/ADHD), and I too just had a story published in a compilation! You can see more about that on my blog, as well as signing up for my giveaway!
Three cheers for the advocate mom, and for celebrating diversity!

My SIL had to go for a level 2 ultrasound a couple of weeks ago.
She has elevated blood levels that could indicate DS.The ultrasound didn't show anything new , she opted not to do the needle thing.
Would love to read this book. Your little girl is beautiful. Will visit your blog again when I have more time to read.
Thanks for visiting my blog and entering my giveaway.

BTW thanks for all the well wishes, I am finally back at home.

It sounds like a very interesting book. I know a couple other people with children with Down Sndrome. It would be interesting to read about it. I agree that the more information someone has about something, the more empathetic they can be.

Sue Seibert said...

Count me in, please. As you may not know, I taught special education for a lot of years, and I taught many, many Downs Syndrome students. I also have adult friends who are Downs.
