Global Down Syndrome Symposium

The Global Down Syndrome Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to significantly improving the lives of people with Down syndrome by supporting basic research, clinical research and clinical care. The GDSF  provides desperately needed funds to underwrite research for people with Down syndrome.

They also sponsor the very successful Be Beautiful Be Yourself Jet Set Fashion Show fundraiser featuring models with Down syndrome. They plan to co-host similar fashion show fundraisers in other states and countries. The next Jet Set Fashion Show is Oct 15; auditions will be coming up soon! This year's ambassador is DeOndra Dixon (Jamie Foxx's sister).

If you're lucky enough to live in/around/near the Denver area, there is a Down Syndrome Symposium Series coming up this weekend; April 15-16. The symposium features Patti McVay, a nationally renowned special education expert.

* If you have any questions for Patti McVay, please leave them in the comments before end of day on Thur. I'll forward them to the GDSF.

Ms. McVay will cover educational tools and processes to support the success of individuals with Down syndrome, including:

  • Collaborative teams and strength based IEPs
  • Visual tools for success
  • Positive behavior planning
  • Curriculum planning
  • Building peer connections
  • Para educators
  • Transition issues

(Continuing Education Credits for Professionals are being offered for this symposium).
