College of Charleston REACH Program

The College of Charleston Realizing Educational and Career Hopes (REACH) Program will commence in the beginning of Fall Semester 2010.

This program is a 4-year inclusive program designed to provide postsecondary education opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities.

The National Down Syndrome Society will provide technical assistance and grant administration.

"The College of Charleston's leadership in developing innovative, inclusive postsecondary education opportunities, coupled with financial support from the College Transition Connection and the State of South Carolina, will result in long-term benefits for students with and without disabilities and will serve to transform the education and employment of students with intellectual disabilities within a state that is developing a comprehensive system of such opportunities," said Stephanie Smith Lee, NDSS Senior Policy Advisor.

The purpose of the program is to provide the opportunity for all students to realize their intellectual and personal potential, and to become responsible, productive members of society. REACH students will participate in the academic, residential, social, and cultural experiences offered by the College, with appropriate support for success.

I love the description of the purpose of this program ... for all students to realize their ... potential.

Maybe Joe and I will retire in SC after all so Kayla can attend this program! Then again, by the time Kayla graduates from high school I can only imagine how many programs will be available to her ... hopefully in every single state.

I'm encouraged by states, colleges, groups, and people, realizing the need and importance for programs like this.

I'm looking forward to discovering all the possibilities of what the future holds for Kayla.

That is wonderful! And I do hope that you're right. By the time our children are ready for secondary education, I hope there are many programs to choose from!
