Sleep...Or Not

I feel like I have a newborn in the house again; and it isn't Lucas! Kayla is going through something right now where she is waking up every single night between 2-4 times. It's exhausting. In the past she has woken up before, but it wasn't all the time. Most of the time she slept through the night.

I'm guessing it's her body maybe coping with all the changes lately, but I'm not sure. She slept fine when we first arrived here, after we came back from NJ without Joe, and after school started. She didn't start this until about 2 or maybe 3 weeks after we were settled here.

She doesn't really say anything when she gets up either. I ask her what's wrong and she just says "mommy bed" - she keeps trying to come in to my bed, but I don't want to start that habit so I bring her back to her bed. Sometimes she gets up again 20 min after I go back to bed.

Again I'll ask her what is the matter and she started saying "water." So I get her a little bit of water. Now when she wakes up I try to pre-empt that and take her to the bathroom first and then give her some water, so she can't ask for it after she's back in bed. This has somewhat cut the times she's waking up to once at night, then once again in the early morning - around 5-6. At that time I'll let her climb in bed with me because she only sleeps until 7.

This is where I usually would nudge Joe in the middle of the night and say "your turn!" I haven't slept through the night in I don't know how long. And Lucas is now sleeping through the night, so it figures Kayla isn't anymore.

I swear the bags under my eyes have taken up permanent residence!

Ah sleep, I guess it's overrated anyway isn't it?

Everytime my kids go through these stages I am reminded how effective sleep deprevation is as a method of torture! Take care my friend and I hope Kayla gets back to her normal sleep patterns.

Do you play music for her? We've played it for K- since she was only a few days old. We play it really low and if there is a noise at night, there is a familiar sound playing over it and it doesn't wake her. Now, K- chooses her own music but up until recently, we played only music that had no words and no familiar musical rhythm that would bring words to her head. It is called her "sleep music."

Just a thought. K- has a cold right now, so I envision a few sleepless nights myself. Ugh.

We give J&J a sippy cup of water every night before they go to bed. I don't know if that would work for Kayla or not, but it circumvents that problem for us.

Of course they don't get up to go to the bathroom at night, if they did then I would stop giving them water to sleep with.

Do you think it has to do with Joe being gone? New school? Whatever it is, I hope it passes soon. Good luck.

I'm sorry. I have nothing to offer but sympathy. Micah sometimes does this but not routinely. Those nights are the worst, and at their ages you'd expect them to just sleep.

Every so often Junior goes through this. That broken up sleep can really get to you. Good luck on getting it straightened out.

I keep reminding myself that sleep is really over-rated anyways :) Antalya has never been good about sleeping through the night. Hoping Kayla can work through whatever it is that is causing her to wake up so you both can get the sleep you need.

Aw, hope Kayla gets some sleep soon so mommy can. If she is otherwise fine, no bladder infection or anything, then I really do not know what the reason would be except that there has been some BIG changes in her life right now. Hopefully, she will get back in her old groove soon. Maybe she needs a day of really getting tired (in Kali's case, anything that involves running) though not sure you will be able to keep up with no sleep.

Praying the situation gets better soon.

I had to befriend the bags under my eyes - I've even named them Zippy and Lola! If we've had a long hard night, my husband says, "Zippy and Lola are back". It helps to laugh - but deep down, I dream of sleeping.

Good luck!

Kids do seem to go through periods when they just don't sleep well. I'm sorry you're not getting your sleep as well. I hope she'll go back to sleeping through the night soon!

I wonder if she is checking to see if you are still there, since Daddy isn't? Poor girl and poor mommy. I hope she feels more confident soon!

My big guy is waking up too, and Bella's nursing like a newborn 5-6 times some nights and sleeping through others...you never know.

I hope you get some sleep soon!

Sounds like Kayla might be missing the security of having Daddy around even more than she realizes. Just a thought. I hope it resolves soon because I'm sure you're both exhausted.

Oh I'm so sorry!! Waking up at night is absolutely no fun for mommy. I hope her night time visits pass soon...

Kids tend to start these little habits out of the blue and it usually takes a few weeks before they get out of it. In the meantime, I know how much you're craving your sleep!! Hopefully she'll get out of it sooner than later! xoxo

I'm thinking it's overrated :) Ethan is still waking up 3 times a night, tonight is the night though that I'm going to try letting him cry through it.

I'm sorry your going through this. Hopefully she will start sleeping soon. Does she sleep with anything that she might like to cuddle with that would remind her of daddy?

You know Michelle, Nicholas went through the exact same thing after we moved to Arizona. He was fine and then about two weeks or three into the move he started waking up constantly, crying, wanting to be in bed with us etc.

I think it's just them trying to adjust, I guess they're smaller so it takes them longer to finally kick in the fact that they're in a different place....plus the fact that Joe is gone too, it's just a bit too much for her right now. Poor thing :)

hugs! I'm thinking she is adjusting....and might truly need more time with you. I'm certain it will pass though.
Sugar will sometimes wake for several nights in a row, and I cuddle with her, then she goes right back to sleeping all night on her own. sometimes the just need us...and that is okay.

Miller did this last month. It was the change in life....with hubby being gone...things are different. Just a phase. I hope you get some much needed sleep. Take naps with the kids...the house work can wait.

Oh I am so sorry! One thing that helped us with our daughter and the "water" problem was to put a small cup of water beside her bed. A sippy cup would work too. This way, it is there already.

I hope she settles back down soon.

I am right there with you!!! My sweet little 14 month old sleeps through the night for a solid 12 or more hours.
Princes Izzy on the other hand; the 3 year old, well she's up every night, sometimes more than once. In fact I am quite certain IZabel has only slept through the night a handful of times her entire life. LOL!!

Same routine you have, pee, drink, my bed. I don't usually let her sleep with us until Daddy goes to work at 7 too. However, I'll admit that a couple times I month I need to stay asleep in my bed. Therefore, I let her crawl in. LOL!

I hope Kayla goes back to her regular routine soon. I would have to agree that maybe her body and emotions are just now starting to catch up. I am sure she has lots of things running through her head while she sleeps.

hugs to you and the kids!!

She's at the age of the night terrors.. so it's a good thing that she is not waking up screaming. Good luck... and take a nap~

Oh, the nighttime trials never end, do they?

Hope she starts to sleep better!

My Kayla goes through those same wacky sleep schedules. And then she's fine. We don't do anything differently, either. So frustrating and exhausting!!

Sleep is definitely not overrated! I could use more of it myself! I hope this phase passes soon!

Sending lullaby prayers your way. I hope Kayla settles soon (and maybe before Lucas switches back to that same schedule!)

Wow, I remember saying that I understood why sleep deprivation was a torture method. You have my good wishes that it ends soon!

I ended up starting a family bed for us because I was so wacked out when our daughter (our 2nd) was tiny that I couldn't get up to nurse her in the middle of the night, so I just brought her to bed so I could rest. No that she's 20 months old that is biting me in the butt, big time. We are having a heck of a time convincing her that she doesn't need to be touching someone in order to sleep. We've tried stuffed animals, heck I'm still trying that, but it's not working. Now I'm thinking that the kids are going to share a bed and her poor brother (who sleeps like a rock) can snuggle with her.

This also reminds me that my mom said I didn't sleep through the night until I was 7. We moved to Texas when I was 9 and the first 6 months there I was doing my whole sleep-walking, waking up thing every night. At least that's what I'm told. I don't remember a thing. I think I owe my mom a card or something because that was cruel.

So it could be worse! :-) I hope I find that things are already better as I catch up on this week's posts.

Thanks for the tip on the camera. I'm so looking forward to seeing what he thinks is interesting to snap a pic of.

Oh man. That stinks. My Kayla's gone through phases like that. Now she'll put herself back to bed (unless it's a nightmare), but it took a lot to get her to do that. I'm sure it's just all the changes for her. Give her as little attention as possible and it will help her ease back to "normal".

:)
