Lucas's first birthday is quickly approaching, I know!, so I've got my mind on birthday parties. On the one hand first birthdays are momentous - a milestone, but do the kids even care, or remember, the celebrations? It's more for us isn't it?
Lucas's first birthday will be bittersweet what with Joe being deployed. Since we just moved to this area it's not like we really have people to invite to a party anyway. So I'm sure it's going to be a pretty low-key affair; poor kid!
Sandra recently did a post on birthday party themes and it got me thinking about Kayla's birthday (still 5 months away, and we won't talk about her turning six) and whether to do any type of theme this year. Up until this point I haven't done any theme birthdays for Kayla, except for a small butterfly theme 2 yrs ago.
Sandra linked to Birthday Express and now I'm finding all sorts of themes - Animals & Insects, Classic, and Exclusive among many others.
I like Three Ring Circus, Sea Life, and Zoology because they aren't character themes.
Now I just hope by the time Kayla's birthday rolls around in July we'll know some people to invite! When you have a summer birthday it's hard to invite the kids in your class if you don't see them regularly.

That's why you get addresses before the end of school! Will's bday is in August, so that's what we do :)
Enjoy Lucas' birthday - I'm sure it is bittersweet.
Hey there! I tagged you for a meme if you are interested in playing!
I understand and had the same dilemma with Brooklyn's party this past November! One I was very pregnant and two - it was mostly adults who would have come to the party! So - we went to the zoo! And we had a blast as did Brooklyn - we had quite a few people join us at the zoo and then we went to dinner afterwards! We still did cake and such at our house the next day (her actual birthday)!!
Good luck with whatever you plan!
Good luck with the party plans, wow turning one already.
I admit that I don't invite kids from K-'s class because in preschool it is a little weird. Besides, her birthday is right before Christmas. We don't have a lack of children. Between the siblings, their sibs, friends and family, we generally run about 15 kids or so.
If church is your thing, you might be able to find a few kids there, too!
Have a great day!
The easiest party was a costume party and the kids had a lot of fun.
One more thing - since moving to this Province, the boys have been invited to 3 Loonie/Twoonie parties. Rather than take an expensive gift, people take a coin (btw, loonies are $1.00 in Canada, twoonies $2.00 - I know, we're really original with our currency.) I appreciate that as we're on one income right now, and it makes it more about being together and having fun.
I wanted to let you know about the T21 Travelling Afghan Project! I hope you will consider participating and I would appreciate it if you could help spread the word! Thanks!

I love planning birthday parties. In the past for Madison we have done these
Princess party..cake had a barbie doll princess on it.
Luau..hotel with pool
Winter Olympics..church gym
Spa Day..at a spa
Mc Donald Play Land
Slumber Party
Pizza Party at Chuckee Cheese
Tea Party Mad hatter Style..I'm doing this one for our MOPS Tea Party too
Miller has had a rubber ducky party for his first with a punch bowl with blue punch with the ducks floating in it...for his second it was Mickey mouse and third Sponge Bob family only
....We do parties with friends at age 4 and end them at 10. After 10 they get a friend over and dinner and bowling or movies...or a slumber party staying at home with pizza and cake.
Birthday parties are over rated...I guess I'am too because I love them.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with for both of them.
You are the deployed husband wife haha. You know where you focus in on one thing and its making so it is successful. It consumes our time is all :) You are going to have fabulus birthday parties for sure!
Isn't Birthday Express great?
I'm lucky in that both the kids birthday's are in April, so right before school ends BUT it is also tough because they're two weeks apart LOL
Now you've got me thinking about Gabe's birthday in April! Michelle, I just cannot believe that Lucas will be one so soon. And how you and your family have been through so much change! Sending lots of big hugs your way!♥
I ahve been thinking about Ethan's 2nd birthday so much and still I am at a loss.
Summer birthdays are great because you can do them outdoors, but yes the summer holiday factor is tough!
I look forward to seeing what you come up with for their birthdays!
Ahh- birthdays! That's certainly on my mind :) This year is our biggest theme so far, usually we just do cake and balloons at home. And up until now they were always happy with that.
Hi! I have been offline for a little bit and hurried while using the pc but I wanted to say Hi and let you know that you are all in my thoughts. I wish for a quick and safe tour for Joe.
Will be praying-
Happy almost birthday Lucas! Unbelievable that he is turning 1!
Both our kids have birthdays in winter, Max is December, Sabrina is January. This year, we had a party for Max at his school, that is it, and i feel a little guilty about that. Those kids are his friends, he doesn't really have others. Which bums me out. Sabrina got a birthday party at this kid place near our house that does parties, and Max had a great time there. But, still, I feel guilty we didn't make a bigger fuss over him. Oh, and did I mention I feel guilty?
Oh it's so totally for the adults... though I'm still a big fan of lots of pomp & circumstance... and more importantly, sugar for the big day!
ahhhh...how did lucas get that old?? seriously handsome boy...and he's gonna be a bday boy too! for sofie's first bday, i focused on great cupcakes i made and a pretty hat for her. everything else didn't matter to me...i wanted her pretty...sad, i know!
I think first birthdays are more for the family than the newly christened 1 year old. Other than eating cake and being distracted gifts and people it doesn't stick in the memory like the ones that come afterward. However, the pictures of cake eating are more than worth the party. ;)
I hope he has an excellent birthday whichever theme you go with.
Jacob's birthday's in July--we do not have a lot of success inviting school friends. If that's truly what you want to do, you might want to have the party in June right before or after school gets out, or make sure you give out invitations right before school's out.
Good luck.
I love planning birthday parties! Have fun...Thank you for giving me such great idea's with the themes. Looking forward to seeing some pics!
We are planning Mattie's birthday too. We are having ours on the 22nd since Matt will be on a Men's Retreat the weekend of her birthday. We figured she really was so young it didn't matter.
There is so much out there for themes. I have done themes, but have scaled down. I spend more time picking out the cake to make now. :) Kayla's in Aaugust and I still invited her whole preschool class. The only ones I left off were those who had "graduated" to 1st grade. I wouldn't worry about that - especially if those are most of the kids you know.
