Fire Safety

I have an uncle who is a firefighter and my sister is a volunteer firefighter. I know fire safety is important year-round, but especially more so this time of the year.

During the cold winter months candles and fireplaces are in use more often...not to mention ovens with all the holiday baking going on!

According to the U.S. Fire Administration nearly 47,000 household fires occur each year during the holiday season - that number of fires is astounding to think about.

Liberty Mutual Insurance and Holly Robinson Peete have teemed up to raise awareness and spread simple tips to keep families safe during the holiday season via Be Fire Smart . This site acts as a resource to parents and educators to talk with children about fire saftey, how to prevent fires, and how to create a family escape plan...something I know we've been lacking in.

The children's section has games, activities, and a downloadable coloring book.

You can enter for a chance to win a trip for 4 to Walt Disney World resort. While there you can visit "Where's The Fire" - the nation's largest interactive fire safety education experience.

So while you're enjoying the holidays this year, make sure you take a few minutes out of the busy days and discuss fire safety with your kids!

Thanks for the reminder Michelle. My brother is a firefighter and they get so many calls around the holidays.

My hubby used to be a volunteer firefighter and now he does home fire safety visits for a living. My husband cringes everytime he hears about another fire where homes have burned down especially when there are fatalities involved.
