Kayla - AKA The Big Sister

Kayla loves being a big sister - sometimes almost suffocatingly so! She's always in his face and I just want to say "Kayla please back away!" I'm trying to be patient and understanding that she just wants to love on her brother, and I do love the fact that she loves him.

Here are some things that Kayla loves about being a big sister:

~ Being a 'big helper' - she is more than happy to grab the "diaper basket" for us when Lucas needs a change (and even so kind as to put it away too!)
~ She wants a wipe so she can wipe him too; I've had to say no to the poopy diapers though!
~ She loves helping us give him a bath...she needs her own washcloth to wash him. We just need to work on not putting a soaking wet washcloth on his face! Gotta work on wringing it out first :)
~ She loves to cover him with a blanket, even if that blanket is a burp cloth. She'll say "here Lucas. Night night." Sometimes she covers his face though, still working on that as well!
~ She wants to "help" us pick him up.
~ If he starts fussing she'll be the first one to run over to him and try to give him the pacifier; even when he doesn't want it she keeps trying to get it in his mouth. There's a lot of things we're still "working on!"
~ She gets so excited to see him in the morning. She'll say "Lucas awake! Hi Lucas" (although she pronounces his name more like goocus!)
~ She's equally excited to see him after school and has to give him hugs and kisses.
~ She shows concern when he's "missing." Like at the zoo last week she knew he was in the stroller, but then Alana was holding him and when Kayla looked in the stroller again she did a quick intake of breath and said "ah Lucas go?" and started looking around for him.
~ She likes to show him off. We were at the library Tuesday night and Katelyn was there. She kept saying "A'mere Katelyn...Lucas (pointing at him) see?"
~ When he cries (which she is now used to and doesn't hide out in her room anymore) she'll say "awww Lucas sad" or "Lucas hungry."
~ Speaking of him being hungry, she has shown her nurturing side as well. The other day we were on the couch and he was fussing a bit. She had the boppy on her lap and wanted me to lay him down on it, which I did. She then proceeded to lift up her shirt and told Lucas "here, milk" LOL Wish I had a video tape for that one! I wondered when I might see her mimic me nursing, but I thought it would be with one of her dolls, not actually with Lucas!
~ She desperately wants him to play and interact with her. She keeps trying to share her things with him by trying to put it in his arms, hands, lap. I keep telling her he's too little to hold anything yet (except my hair and shirt!), but she keeps trying "here Lucas, for you."

So she got really excited when he grabbed on to this bear she kept trying to give him..."mommy look! Lucas have it!" Then when he managed to get the bear's ear in his mouth she told him "no Lucas, no mouth!"

These next 3 pictures crack me up - they both have the same facial expression or are doing the same thing in each one:

(any advice on how to get her to stop biting/chewing on her nails and fingers?!)

~ As a big sister she likes to keep him company when he's awake and having tummy time:

She calls this his "exercise" and shows him how to lift his head up high

I had wanted them to be closer in age (and still kind of wish they were since she so badly wants to play with him), but maybe this wasn't such a bad age after all for her to become a big sister! :)

That is so sweet!! Dominic and Delphine are far apart in age, but he still adores her, and finds ways to play with her. It's so cute. I'm sure Kayla will do the same.

Oh thank you for the laugh - her trying to nurse him is the best! :) She is such a sweet big sister. And it will just get better when she can actually help him do things as he gets older.

Love the pictures of them. They are so precious!

Kayla is the best big sister there is around:-) It's wonderful how much she loves being with him...I can imagine how frustrated she gets when he won't play with her but wait until he's old enough to do so...then she'll say he's bugging her! lol Love the pictures, both are so precious. xox

She'll be a great big sister when he's old enough to play too, I'm sure.

Michelle, all of those pictures are so adorable! I love how much she enjoys being a big sister. I've been nervous about how Logan will handle it. I guess we'll know in about 4 months :)

BTW - the daycare that Logan goes to 2 morning/week there is a little boy there named Lucas. Logan pronounces his name as "moocus" - hahaha

Oh my gosh, she is too sweet. What a great sister!

As for the finger biting -- nail polish as a reward for not doing it?

She is such a wonderful big sister.I laughed so hards after reading Kayla tried to nurse Lucas.I think Kayla and lucas are the perfect age apart. katie was 3 when i had tiffany. Kayla is a fantastic big sister!! I had to laugh at the "we're working on that" statements :-)

Oh Michelle, your family is so beautiful!! I just love the pictures.
Kayla so wants to be the "little Mommy". It's just so precious.
You know, my boys are 2.5 years apart and they fight like fiends. Even if you had them closer, there is no guarantee they would get along.

awww that is so so incurably sweet. I wanted my kids to be closer in age too, but there was another plan. It is working out well. Forcing me to slow down plus I know in the near future I will have some one on one time with the youngest :)

Gorgeous pictures. What a loving big sister she is. I so enjoyed that post :-) Oh I think it is a nice age difference. There are 26 months between my son and daughter and my oldest was a human dynamo going through 2 year stuff when my daughter was a baby, so whilst I like the fact they are close in age now, the first couple of years were very challenging at times.

Oh that is so beautiful!
Kayla is such a great big sister :)
If the nail biting is really bad you can get this bitter tasting stuff to paint onto them - i think you can get it from pharmacys...
As long as she doesnt let Lucus suckle her fingers afterwards!

I have been lurking on your blog for quite some time now. I don't really even know how I first came across it, but I have really enjoyed reading it. I had a little boy on February 22. Your children are precious! You can certainly tell in these pictures that they are brother and sister. So adorable!

Ahh! They are just too cute. I love having a girl and boy. They will share a great bond.

I love how much she loves him! What a dear, I'll bet you just about burst with pride when you see the two of them together. And it's funny that Micah is very much the same way with babies. He just loves them to death. But he's not getting another sibling!

She is doing a great job being a big sister. Gabi used to bite her nails at Kayla's age and I finally broke her of it by using the hot nail polish and stopping biting my own nails. I wasn't crazy about the "hot" nail polish since I thought she would stick it in her eyes, but she didn't. Now she is biting them again thanks to Ryan and his biting habit. I may have to get some more. I just wish it would work for Ryan, too! LOL!

That is adorable!! It's so cute that she loves being a big sister so much. They will be the best of buddies and running around together all the time pretty soon! I love the pics. I can't believe how much Lucas has grown!!

So sweet! Abbie tried to nurse all three of her sisters, as well as pump! Its a riot! And the picking up the baby is still a major issue in our house, and our "baby" is 15 months.

(if you figure out the nail biting, will you let us know?)

Oh Michelle, they are so adorable!!! Lucas is really growing so fast already...it seems like just yesterday he was a newborn.

They are just precious. I love that she wanted to "give him milk" to funny. As for biting nails, well if you find a cure let me know because I have been doing it all my life. Yeah is a yucky habit, second only to smoking.

how cute!! i love that last picture. I knew Kayla would do great as a big sister!!

Love the photos. I don't think there's a perfect age gap. Every family just seems to work it out best with the gap they have. They look adorable together. She is obviously completely in love with her baby brother

Love it! Your posts always bring a smile to my face. Kayla is a great big sister!

The pictures are precious. I think Kayla is a wonderful big sister. The stories of her "taking" care of him are just so cute. I bet Lucas keeps Miss Kayla pretty busy=)

Kayla is quite the helper, isn't she? The pictures sure did make me laugh today. They really were doing the same facial expressions in them.

I've never had a nail biter so I don't know what to tell you, Michelle.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

How precious. I recall my kids going through the same thing, super helpful with the babies. It is wonderful she is so loving and accepting. My girls use to nurse their dolls when I nursed the boys (they are the younger two). Adorable! Hugs!

Oh he is sooooooooo beautiful and I love the name Lucas!!!! Oh I'll have to add his name to my announcement.
They are darling together, darling! I am so very very happy for you, thrilled in fact!

So sweet! Lately, Greg wants to pick up Leah. Like you, we're working on it (working on NOT doing it alone, that is).

What sweet, sweet pictures of the two of them together! It's neat to hear how much Kayla loves Lucas and wants to help care for him.

I'm seeing some of this with Snuggle Bug and Baby Bug. If Baby Bug cries, he rushes to her and tries to sooth her. When he realizes I'm going to change her diaper, he wants to come and do it for me (he's actually not bad at it, as long as there's no poopy). He likes to help feed her too.

The one thing he doesn't try to do is hold her. She's too squirmy for him so holding her is not fun. :)

Thanks for sharing the pictures!

What gorgeous children...you are also a great photographer...ever thought of getting into that professionally:-)??

As far as biting nails....I wish I had the answer...Stephanie still chews on hers and she is 22.

Have a great weekend.

Your kids are too cute!

This past winter, I told Brenna that if she quit biting her nails and let me cut them with a clippers, that I would paint her nails. It worked and she has quit, which was pretty amazing because she always chewed on them while falling asleep.

The Big Sister sounds like she is doing a great job! Jonathan chewed on his fingers for several years, it was hard to break. Sad thing is now he chews on the inside of his jaw...sigh! Good luck with it!

Christina said...

Sooo cute! Kallie was a good big sister too when Brittany was younger. They are only 23 months apart, so it was a little challenging to have a running toddler and a crying baby! LOL As for the biting nails, ey yi yi, if you find out, let me know! Cute pictures!

How fun!!! :) I will never forget when Kassidy's preschool called me and told me she was trying to nurse the baby dolls! haha

Kennedy was the same way with Keeghan... now she just calls him "naughty" all the time! haha

Kerry said...

How sweet! She is a GREAT big sister. There's probably not a lot of jealousy there because they are farther apart in age.

they're sooo cute!!!!
when are you coming to md so i can see them ^_~
one way to get kayla to stop biting her nails is to buy clear nail polish that apparently tastes reall really gross. (i don't think it's recommended for kids though....?) or i also heard putting pepper or garlic on her nails would help too? ...i wouldn't recommend garlic cause it smells funny.
i love how kayla tries to stick the pacifer in his mouth ... like it's supposed to work all the time. lol. i like her theory.
what size does kayla wear...i want to order something offline for her bday, ...i hope it fits!

<3,
Aunt Kel!! ^_^

You have such a precious family and your son is so blessed to have such a loving, attentive big sister. I came here originally because of the bloggy giveaway, but I just had to come back. Your daughter is cute as a button and so photogenic. She looks a lot like my 13 year old daughter did when she was young and it brings back sweet memories. You are one blessed mommy!
