Girl or Boy?

I used to always want one of each, but now? I'm not so sure! I started out wanting a boy this time, but there is a part of me that would like another daughter. I think it would be nice for Kayla to have a sister.

Besides, there are all the baby girl clothes I've saved! Kayla received so many clothes, and she was always small for her age, slow to grow, so by the time she could wear something it was out of season. A lot of her clothes she didn't get to wear that much, so it would be nice to have another girl and be able to use those clothes again instead of having to go buy a boy's wardrobe!

And then there is this: I find myself thinking, "...but I don't know what to do with a boy!" I know that sounds ridiculous, believe me, I do! I've heard other moms say that before and I used to think it sounded silly. You don't do anything different just because they are the opposite gender - you just do the same thing! Except now I'm in those shoes and I feel like I understand what is meant by that statement. We've had a girl in the house for the last 4.5 years; it'll seem weird to have a boy!

Which probably means we're having a boy! LOL

I do know that no matter if we have a son or daughter they will fit right in to our family dynamics, things will all come together, and we'll be in love with this next child just as much as our first.

So I thought it would be fun to have a little poll up to see what you guys out there think we are having. There is a little poll on the top right sidebar, just vote for which gender (and it's anonymous).

I think it's one of those "old wives tales" but if there is any truth to it and you want to know what this baby's heartbeat has been to help you make your choice I'll tell you...it's mostly been in the 140s. Last week was 152, but for the most part it seemed to hold steady at 140s (although that could be just guesstimates from the midwives and doctors as they didn't actually count it each time). And for the record? Kayla's heartbeat was about 140s/150s throughout too.

I had a boy and a girl. I enjoyed them both but have to say that my son loved to read and play quietly for the most part. That made it easy as I am definitely not into sports but loved to support his reading habit. (Now he's a surfer, becoming a teacher-at 34 years of age). I've enjoyed both of my kids.

Having a boy first, I really wanted a girl next (although happy with two of the same), but I must admit to feeling - OK I'm used to having a boy, cleaning a boy...how do I do this with a girl? You are very patient waiting to see what you will have. I had to know with both of mine, but still had an open mind until I heard the words 'You have a boy, or you have a girl'. I've felt from the beginning you would have a boy, but I am notoriously wrong, so it must be a girl!! My son is a real boy's boy, but he loves his Mum (not in a Mummy's boy way), there is a sweet relationship between Mother and son. My daughter is Miss uber feminine, we love to shop together, snuggle and it's a real blessing to have two such different characters and opportunities.

It was the oddest thing to go from all boys to all of sudden having a girl, but I got used to it and now it's loads of fun to have different genders.

I feel like you're having a girl. I can so see Kayla with a baby sister, but I know she'll adore a brother just the same.

You are having a...........baby gender!!!!!! :) like you said, this baby will fit right in and you will wonder why you even had thoughts about "how will I manage with a boy? You are so funny, but they are real feelings.... I go back and forth.....love mom/grandma

I was one of those moms who said I wouldn't know what to do with a boy! In fact, when I found out Kameron (my 2nd) was a boy, I cried! LOL There's just something about a son though that is so special. You just can't comprehend it until you have one... *sigh*. I love my boys! So for that reason, I hope you have a boy... every mother should get to experience it! (On the other hand I totally know what you mean about all the girl clothes! LOL Kennedy has TONS!) Can't wait to find out!!!

This made me smile, Michelle, because when Krissy found our the new baby is a girl, she said, "I don't know if I'll know what to do with a girl!." :-)

Somehow I think you'll both figure it out. LOL

And I don't think the heartbeat thing is a myth. My own obstetrician told me the same thing, almost 30 years ago. Baby girls' hearts seem to beat faster.

I'm predicting another girl, based on those numbers. :-)

I never seem to guess right when it comes to baby genders. But, like Karen said, from the beginning I've felt like you're having a boy. But, also like Karen said, that probably means you're having a girl! Really, I am bad at this guessing game. I just can't wait to find out and see pictures of the new addition to your family.

Maybe it's a boy!
Boys are so sweet. So are girls. Win win either way.

For the record I guessed a boy, but either way you will be blessed with another little miracle. I didn't know the sex with noah. Everyone said it was a boy , I felt boy throughout until the two weeks before. I panicked and thought for sure I was having a girl and needed to buy more pink. So guess what I have in my closet three outfits with pink outfits. So if you have a girl they are yours! Plus if you have a boy, we can talk because we have lots of boy clothes .

I think you're having a boy!
You know, I never thought that I wanted sons but now that I have one, I find them DELIGHTFUL. There is nothing quite like the love of a little boy, as rough and cuddly as a puppy. Either way, your family will have a wonderful new addition.

I have 3 girls and always thought the same thing. I wouldn't trade my little prince for the world. He is such a love bug. He never ever peed on me, but he did pee everywhere else. The only thing I have found hard to deal with is lately. I think he has discovered the sensation in lower parts. I caught him rolling over a ball on certain parts the other day. This is definitely daddys dept.

rylie's mom said...

Having three girls myself, I couldn't imagine having a boy! I'm sure if I had three boys, I would say the opposite!LOL! I voted girl for you!

Theresa said...

I really think Julie's comment is a scream! I voted boy because you looked like you were carrying out front. I carried out front with both and have one of each. My sister and I did the old wives tale, swinging wedding ring. Ever hear that? She was swinging girl. I was swinging boy. We both had girls. But there is nothing like my little guy calling me momma. The mother/son thing is so great. Theresa

awww I cannot even imagine my world without our little boy now. I also enjoyed taking all of my girl's clothes to a second hand shop, trading them in for cute boy clothes!!!!

Boys are so sweet. I am rooting for a boy for you :)

When I was PG with your wonderful husband, not that I'm prejudiced or anything LOL, I wanted a boy from the very beginning. I don't know why I never was around baby boys that much but I just wanted one. I look back on it now and I honestly can't imagine a girl being any different from a boy until the potty training starts LOL.

Being on the grandma side of things now I can honestly say it doesn't matter but.... wouldn't it be neat to have a little Joey Jr running around the house :-) I know he wouldn't be a Jr but you know what I mean.

I am so glad you guys have waited until the baby arrives - we didn't know with either and it was so special that my husband told me that we had girls (of course, it was just he and I at Brooklyn's birth because we didn't make it to the hospital)!!! I voted you were having a boy - don't know why! I agree with your feelings - I would have no clue what to do with a boy given I have two girls! You'll figure it out though and Kayla will be a GREAT big sister to a baby brother or baby sister! Prayers for a safe and quick labor/delivery! Can't wait to find out about the new little one!

Kerry said...

I don't know.. . you look like you are all in front, so I m going to have to say a boy... I will vote now!

Kayla will be a GREAT big sister!!!

I have been going back and forth about what this baby's gender is. With Kayla, I always pictured Joe having his little "daddy's girl" and so now I think my final vote will be "boy". And let me tell you... Lani will have some great clothes for you if I'm right. I remember thinking I wouldn't know what to do with a boy when I found out I was pregnant with Nate. The first time I changed his diaper I was like: what the?? oh yeah! he's a boy! Hahaha!! I can't wait to meet this little one!!

I guess it's a girl!

I get a boy vibe...but the numbers are similar to mine with Sugar. So maybe a girl.

I have 2 girls and a boy. I enjoy doing things with them all. I think having a little boy will fit right in with your family. Now with the heartbeats you really can't go by. Gary and Tiffany's heartbeat was about the same.

Ok, I truly think you're having a boy. Which, as you may remember, is usually a sure sign of you having a GIRL.

I'm anxious to see if I'm wrong for the first time in a loooong time.

Sue said...

I know what you mean. When I was pregnant with Alysa I knew how much fun it was to have a girl, but I also knew I'd have fun with a boy. With either pg, I really didn't have a true preference. I wanted both each time. LOL

We've always had girls in my family - cousins, etc. So when my sis found out her first was a boy - I was like, what do I do with a boy? :) I quickly found out how fun boys are. I do believe there are differences (not that we only stick to "girl" toys in our house) - but I know from my nephews and friends who have boys. I will say though, I don't play "boy" right. My oldes nephew always tells me I'm not playing "right" with his transformers or action figures. LOL

Robin said...

I'm guessing a boy - based on the way you are carrying it. The heartbeat thing NEVER worked for me. I was always told my babies would be boys based on the heartbeats - I had 4 GIRLS!
Whatever it is - it will be a blessed baby to be a part of your family!

Karen said...

I know what you mean! My first was a girl and I wanted another girl for her to have a playmate so badly. She ended up with 3 brothers following. And we love our family just the way God intended.

I voted boy, just because I have a feeling. I agree that it would be nice for Kayla to have a sister. But brothers are wonderful, too, and I'm sure she'll be the best big sis ever.

Tara said...

I felt like you did....I had a girl first and didn't know what in the world to do with a boy. But, you are so right - the little guy just becomes part of the family and it seems so natural. So, if you have a boy - you will be wonderful with him! :) Kayla is going to be fantastic big sister!

No matter if its a boy or girl you'll be a wonderful, loving mother. You'll just know.
I had one of each, boy first. He had a little apron and stood on a chair and made cookies with me. His dad thought I make a sissy out of him. No way,he was a little dare devil.Played all sports. What I did make is a wonderful caring father, who love to cook and do things with his daughters.
Either one will be a blessing from God. If it is a boy, the first time you hold him all you fears will vanish.

Having two of each I can tell you girls and boys are very different. There is something special about the bond of a mom and son but there is equally something special about the bond between a mom and daughter...either a son or daughter, would be equally loved by everyone. Kayla will just love the "baby" boy or girl.
I remember how exciting it was before each of my children were born and I am just so happy for your family.

I don't think I could wait until the birth of the baby to find out what I'm having. I'm not good at surprises :)

Tammy said...

Oh, I know what you mean...at my age, I'm hopefully all done having babies and don't plan on more- but after two girls, I completely wouldn't know what to do with a boy. And actually, more times than not, they are very different from what I hear- at least after they reach toddlerhood. But I know that whatever God gives you, He'll give you the love and wisdom for it!

That all said...I am going to guess girl for you. But of course am even more clueless than you, the mommy, are! :)

I waited to find out and be surprised with both my babies, but I tell ya' it was much harder waiting with my second!

And now I can't wait to find out what yours will be!

I voted for a boy...I dont believe that heartbeat stuff...lol. And you are so right, no matter what you have you will all be so totally in love with it in a matter of minutes! It will fit right into your life and I wish you all the happiness in the world Michelle. You and Joe are great parents....God bless that little baby, he or she is going to have a wonderful home with loving parents and a beautiful big sister!

You are looking fantastic Michelle. I hope you're having a boy. We're expecting too - but I'm at 22 weeks, and we know we're having a boy. Sheena is very 'pink', and there is only 1 top that her baby bro will be able to use. More shopping.

my child was a girl all through the pregnacy.....until he was a born and low and behold he's a boy....
But I have to agree with you and not knowing what to do with a boy. I have 3 sisters, a neice.....what did i know about boys? I didn't know what to do with them either. But I am glad he is who he is.......13 year old hormonal mess that he is right now.

Ah man, i can't wait for him to turn into a normall human being....here's to puberty!

I voted for a boy, but I really haven't a clue. :)

I understand your dilemma though. We're trying to adopt a little girl next, but part of me thinks it'd be neat for Snuggle Bug to have a baby brother. ((sigh)) I guess we'll just see what happens. I do have new adoption related news on my blog. Come check it out.

Also, I've got some free books up for grabs as part of my February Pay It Forward Book Exchange. Stop by if you're interested in a chance to win. :)

And just for the record, I can't WAIT to read about your delivery and see the pictures. :)

I can 100% relate to your post. I wanted a boy with my first pregnancy, but I am thrilled with a daughter. I always thought I would love one of each, but now I am torn. I loved having a brother and would love to have a son, but part of me longs for my daughter to have a sister...luckily, it's all decided already anyway, LOL!

My guess is a girl! My girls were always in the 140s, 150s. My son was always 125 to 133. Who knows if this holds true, but "I think" it did for us.

Blessings,

My eldest daughters heartbeat was always in the 130's. The doctors were always saying "he" or "him"... I always felt like I was having a girl but by the end of the 9 months I thought it was crazy to think so but now she is a 27 year old young lady... I had two girls followed by 2 boys. They are all different and all blend right in. Fun! Hugs!

Well this made me smile Michelle. I wanted 3 girls. Honestly I didn't want a boy all 3 times. I love them all 3 the same but for differant reasons. Wouldn't change them for anything today but at the time I secretly wished for a girl each time. One thing I have found with boys is they are way more snuggly and affectionate.
