Choosing a Name

I think apart from the actual labor and delivery the choosing of a name for your child has to be one of the hardest things! Unless you're lucky and you've known for years what you would name your kids and you happen to marry a guy who agrees with you...then end of discussion!

It's not that Joe and I even have disagreements about names, for the most part we agree on a lot of the same names. That might be the problem though. We agree on too many names and are now trying to narrow that down. We've narrowed it down to a few, but we just can't say for sure what name will be "the one" we stick with. I know some people wait to see their baby and then they just know what his/her name should be, but I don't know if that will happen for us; we just need to decide!

We do have a few names left over from our list when we were expecting Kayla - like Leah - but I think that sounds too much like Kayla so that's off the list.

Then there is the meaning of a name...how much weight do you put into what a name means when deciding on a name? What if you really like the name, but don't like the meaning? Do you still go with the name, because really, how often do we even use or talk about the meaning behind the name? We have a name we both like, but it means "elf ruler" and ummm...that put a kink into for me! Elf ruler? Really? Do I want my potential daughter to look up her name and see it means that? LOL

After you sort through names you need to see if it sounds right and flows ok with the last name, make sure the initials don't spell out anything, does the name "go" with the other family members' names, etc. So much to think about!

A few people have asked if we have names picked out (and we sure didn't make it easier on ourselves by not finding out the gender!) so here is what is currently on the top of our lists:

Girl:
Ashley Lauryn or Lauryn Ashley
Aubrey Lynn
Jessica Lynn

Boy:
Nathan Tyler or Nathan Lucas
Lucas Tyler or Lucas Michael
Liam Scott or Liam Michael

I think we even have a few more combinations, but I need to find my slip of paper!

Oh decisions, decisions!

Just another reason I'm not ready for this baby to arrive!

You are right...choosing the name is HARD! But, you know, whatever you pick will end up being perfect for this little one! You've got some great choices there...can't wait to hear what you decide.

I have some advice about if you like a name ,but not the meaning.
I knew w/ my last baby that if we had a girl I wanted to name her Cecily. Right before she was born I looked up the meaning of the name Cesalie and found out that it meant" Blind". I was very upset, and I was afraid to give her that name, but I loved it so much. So then I figured, Aren't name meanings associated with how they are spelled? So I just decided to change the spelling to Cesalie. I could be wrong but that is how I convinced myself. Anyway, I never even thought about it again until I just read your post. Also, I ended up liking my new spelling, it matches her sisters-Karlie and Rylie. I really like the name Aubrey! We could never think of a boys name, if we would of had a boy I still don't think he would have a name.lol!

I love the spelling of Lauryn! And I love the name Aubrey!!! I love Liam too! Keeghan means little ball of fire. Still kicking myself for that one... he's living up to it! LOL

Choosing names was TOUGH for us too. Nolan's came easy, but Kaia and Pierce not so much. Kaia was the hardest. Even while in labour at the hospital (which wasn't very long) we still didn't have a name. Then, even after she was born we couldn't think of one. I had a list of names at home, but none of them fit. She was named 2 days later....poor kid.

Of the names on your list, I LOVE the name Lauryn Ashley...it flows really nice, and putting it together like "Michelle, Joe, Kayla and Lauren", it SO works!

As for the meaning? I would think she would LOVE to be an elf ruler, cuz that would mean she's SANTA CLAUS!

What does miss Kayla like? I love all of those and Liam Scott is just cool!

I know choosing names can be lengthy. It was easier for our son, we both liked the names straightaway. He is Joseph John Isaac. When we were expecting our Joe, we knew we liked the name Emma for a girl, so that was easy too. Emma's full name is Emma Jorja Bronia. Bronia was my little fancy from when I was 11 years old and read this book about a wee Polish girl, and from that day on, I always said...if I have a wee girl Bronia needs to be in there somewhere (my hubby indulged me). Jorja is after the chick from CSI. We have a neighbour with a girl called Leah. One of my blog friends has a daughter named Alia (A-Leah) which is lovely, and another name popular in NZ is Annalia. I think an Ashley sounds very pretty. My son has an Aubrey in his Class, she has a shock of red hair. I love Nathan and Liam (Nathan was on my short list if Emma had been a boy).

Exciting! Can't wait to hear your choices.

Do we get to vote :-) I like Ashley Lauryn and Nathan Lucas. Have you thought about Lucas Scott or Scott Lucas??

I love Nathan and Liam for boy and Lauryn Ashley.....I'm sure whatever you decide on will be perfect. :)

I just want to know if it's a boy or girl LOL

Very wonderful names! I'm sure whichever you choose will be fitting. Everyone seems partial to Liam but that is that name of the "bad boy" in my sons class so I can't give that one a nod :)

Well, at least you have too MANY names instead of NO names. They all sound fine to me. I really like Liam, though. I have a thing for Irish sounding names...

I like Aubrey and Lucas. Whatever you choose will be the perfect name for your new baby!

Matt and I had a really hard time naming our first, Amanda (Jane)... Jane is a family name. Amanda was a mutual name agreed upon... I wanted so badly to name her Lauren Ashley. I still love that name... so it would be my pick!

I like Liam for the boy. Could you use joe's middle name or is his first name Joseph... Like Liam Joseph or Liam ??? I like using names from family. Or... can you use your maiden name?

Bailey is my maiden name and we named our first son John Bailey. The name Jon is a family name. Matt's name is John Matthew...

I like Lauryn Ashley,Aubrey Lynn and Nathan Tyler.

With my youngest child we had the names down to Kember or Kyla and we did indeed just wait till she was born to name her-When I looked at her I knew that she was a Kyla.It was just a feeling.I highly recommend doing it that way-its a great story to tell the child later and it is a really cool feeling to just KNOW what you should name your child by looking at them.

I love Lauryn Ashley & Liam ;-)
LOL we didnt name Lachie for 3 days after he was born because we thought he was a girl, Isabelle just didnt seem right after that!
Good Luck!

Why is it the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" comes to mind?? lol I so agree with you, it is indeed hard to pick a name when you have many favourites. When I was expecting Corey we had kind of decided on "Derek" if it was a boy but when I looked at him after he was born I said "nope he doesn't look like a Derek, he looks like a Corey"...so we named him Corey! If I had had a girl, I wanted to name her Tara Lee. xox

awww so sweet. I knew our daughter's name instantly. It took us forever to discover our son's name ... You'll know, when you see the baby you will know!

Anonymous said...

HA!!! I punted that name because of its meaning: elf ruler. IMHO, I'm a firm believer in namesake.
I love all the names that you have listed, though!
As for our name game, Sophia & I have our fave picked but we've yet to woe Griff to our side. ;)

Michelle,

I love all of your names. I think when you see your new baby you will know the right name for him/her.

Cute names! I love Liam. You're right, there's so much put into a name. But my SIL and I joke that after 9 months of choosing the perfect nomer, we end up calling the kids by ridiculous nicknames anyway.

Name was a way hot topic for us, and he won. There was not even a stitch of open discussion. As soon as we found out we were pregnant, he stated immediately that if it was a girl it would be Nebraska. I just cringed...but now there she is, as much little Braska as she could be.

It's so nice that you agree on several. I know what you mean about the meanings. When I was choosing some to try to counter offer, I spent alot of time on meanings...I wanted something that would always tell her clearly who she was (like gift from God, precious, beloved, etc). I know you'll choose a great one. I like Lauryn, Jessica, and Nathan Tyler.

As a side thought, one mom talked about picking a name with her daughter (DS)/sibling in mind regarding how easy or difficult it would be for her to say. I don't know if that's something to consider or not...thought I'd throw it out there. :o)

Sometimes the name has a different meaning in a different language.

We didn't get a boys name picked out til just before the delivery. My husband didn't want him named after him cause he didn't like the "big" and "little" game all through life. But when he saw him come out, he cried and said he wanted him named after himself. So it was always Steve and Stevie, now it's Steve and Stephen.

one up side to having had marriage troubles when my daughter was born, I got to pick the name. LOL okay may not seem funny, but I really was glad I didn't have to try to pick a name that hubby wouldn't veto. I had wanted a baby for soooooooooooo long, I am glad that I got to pick her name.

oh and for the record....hubby likes her name now, but if he had had a vote...he wouldn't have chosen it.

I vote Lauryn Ashley and Liam Michael!

I think the name meanings and deriatives count a bit. Elf ruler? Really? That's just awful!

I have always loved the name Cain and didn't use it because Cain killed his brother Abel in the Bible.

I love Aubrey for a girl! It's so pretty.

I really love Aubrey and Lucas! Whatever you decide I am sure that it will fit perfectly with your newest addition!

Names, Names, Names ... I remember going through this just last year, LOL. Once we saw Levi, we knew Levi was the name for him. I love the name Liam. I'm fond of unique names and that isn't heard too often.

I agree with the person, I think it was Amanda Jane who offered the suggestion of using a family name and Joe's name somewhere in the mix of names you have selected.

I like Aubrey especially using your name Michelle with it, although I know it wasn't on your list.

I like Nathan, I know two very nice and very handsome Nathans so I have good feelings about the name. Nathan Joseph??

Lauryn will forever have to correct people about the spelling of her name-too tiring for me!

Of course all these comments will make your head swim, but one thing everyone will agree on is you will have a beautiful baby!

Can't wait to hear your final choice!

Great names! And you are FAR braver than I am to announce what you are thinking out there for the world to comment on! :) With our first, we told my MIL what we were thinking, and that was among the dumbest things we've ever done. She shot down names we LOVED because she knew kids with those same names who were poorly behaved. Whatever. 12 years later and it still aggravates me. :) All of your names are WONDERFUL! I love them. Liam is COOL. He could totally save a nation, I think. :)

Maybe for the elf leader name you could find a DIFFERENT website or book and it will have a completely different meaning! :) So excited for you. :)

I really like the name Scott. If you agree on to many names its a problem, but for us we don't agree on any name.

Oh, you're more ready than you think, Michelle. I'm hearing the same thing from Krissy, but she's ready too. If Avery were born tomorrow, she'd be ready.

I like Jessica. A Lot. I like it so much, I named our golden retriever Jessica Leah. We called her Jessie.

And I like Liam. Liam is a strong name.

I love your blog. I also love the names Aubrey, Liam and Lucas!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll need it...

What's wrong with Leah! LOL Sorry, couldn't resist as it's my name. ;)

Aubrey Lynn has a beautiful sound to it, so does Liam Scott.

At least you've just got a handful to pick from and not a whole book consider.

Names are sooo hard!! I'm trying to convince my daughter and SIL of all my favorites for the girl they are expecting!!!

Michelle said...

I agree, choosing a name is definitely a huge deal. I always thought I had names picked out that I just had to name my kids. Turns out when you're actually pregnant and have to use the name you think of more things than when you're young and are just picking random names. You'll choose a great one though, don't worry.

Amy said...

Would the elf ruler name be Avery? That is my daughter's name and even stranger is that she has Williams syndrome, which was once know as Elfin syndrome. So I like to think her name is a good omen. Meaning if she has ws then she will be a king in her world as it relates to ws, that she will thrive and be prosperous.

I like Aubrey Lynn and Lucas Tyler. Though all of them sound great! Give me a few minutes and I would probably pick another one of yours, haha.

Our next girl, when we adopt again, is going to be Kyrah Lynn and if we adopt a boy would be Dalton Douglas.

Meanings of a name can vary so much. Kali's (pronounced Callie) name has had many meanings based on where we looked. My favorite was when our friend went to Greece and found out good morning was Kalimera with Kali meaning good so we just go with that if anyone asks. You find a name you and your husband like and find the meaning that is important to you. You will be surprised how many different meanings are out there for a name. So whatever name was Elf Ruler will probably have a nicer meaning somewhere else. Kali's name based on where you look is "goddess of destruction", "time", "energy" and many others. I think it just depends on what origin someone wanted to go with.

To be truthful, we didn't look up the meaning when we named her. We had saw Kali in part of a word for a subdivision and loved the sound and spelling of it and next thing we knew two months later we were parents.

It just comes down to dont worry with anyone thinks. You name your child. I really cannot remember anyone ever asking us or anyone I know at a baby shower or any other occasion, "what does the meaning of your baby's name mean".

Cannot wait to see your new little one!! Kayla is going to be a great big sister!

Gosh, I am babbling!! Sorry! I need to get out of the house, lol.

We too had difficult choosing names (we didn't know either). So we carried in two girl names Ashley Victoria and Jennifer Victoria and Noah James was the keeper. I love Lauryn also. As for the boys, I like them all, Liam seems to float to the top. They are all great names.

Mayhem And Miracles said...

I did a quick search and there were no less than 5 different names that meant "elf ruler." One of them was one of my very favorite names and I had never heard the meaning in all those years living next door to her. But I completely understand that being a consideration. We tried so hard to think of EVERYTHING associated with our kids names and still, other kids thought up things we never considered (nothing too mean, though). Just to chime in my vote, I like Ashley Lauryn and Lucas Tyler, but I think whatever you as the parents decide will sound the best.

Tammy and Parker said...

I'm a total Lauryn Ashley fan!

Mayhem And Miracles said...

BTW,we couldn't narrow down our second son's name UNTIL I put "Grandpa" in front of it. And one of them just stuck out then as one that would sound good not just for a baby, but forever.

Sue said...

I love those names. My favorite is Aubrey Lynn and Lucas Michael. :)

I had Kayla's name picked out way b4 I was pregnant (then again she took 2.5 years to conceive, so I had plenty of time - LOL). It took some time to convince J of her name. Alysa was harder (I wanted Rylie, but J said noway - his middle name is Riley). When we chose it, we chose her spelling by the meaning. Alysa means princess, while Alyssa meant something else. So we went with Alysa and made sure she can never find anything with her name spelled correctly on it. LOL

My favorites on your list: Lauryn Ashley and Liam Michael. But of course it has to be what YOU guys feel the best with, just let them simmer for awhile, I'm sure "the name" will rise to the top in perfect timing.

I love your names... I do like Aubrey best probably because it is not as well-known as the others.

I have always loved the name Brady -- from Brady Bunch, Brady from Days of Our lives, Brady from Sex and the City -- but being from New England everyone thinks our son is named after Patriots quarterback Tom Brady! Unfortunately, it is starting to get really popular here too!!

I like your choices in names. Funny we have similar tastes...Lauren was on our list 4 times but never ended up naming anyone that!
Just because ....my kids are
Lathan Tyler (Lathan was kind of made up , heard once or twice and found in a baby book, it means "noble man")
Hunter Logan ( Chris wanted a totally "boy" sounding name..you can't keep the kid inside for anything, so the name must fit :)
Hannah Elizabeth ( total Biblical name but made great grandma's extremely happy)
Abigale Mae ( also family names..abigale means " a father's joy" couldn't be more true)

Anyway, i think it is fun to hear stories behind what you name kids,

Noel ( no my birthday is not around Christmas, it is my Dad's name backwards...Leon, tons better than the other options I think)

Personally I love Liam and think every boy should be named after his father or grandfather. I love Aubrey.

These names are more unique. I am so very excited for you.

When we named our daughter Timoni (Acts 6 disciple, Timon) I didn't think my hubby would go for it but he loved it.

When we had our fourth child it was a good thing we had a boy because we could not agree on a girls name at all. It was strange because we had always agreed before.

I never did want to know if I was having a boy or girl. The surprise is half the fun!

Hugs!
