Tubes, Tubes, Tubes!

2 Fridays ago Kayla saw her ped for a sports physical (because I was signing her up for Smart Start Soccer).

Her ped mentioned that he didn't see the tube in her right ear, but maybe his view was blocked because there was a bit of wax. I didn't dwell on it too much, holding out hope that he was right, it was the wax impeding his view.

Today was Kayla's every-4-month visit to the ENT. The tube in her right ear has indeed come out. I was so bummed to hear that news. She just had this set of tubes put in back in March ... only 6 months ago! I can't believe it didn't even last a year. He put in titanium tubes which were supposed to last longer. He said Kayla's body is just really good at spitting these tubes out.

So we're looking at a 4th surgery for tubes. I wasn't too eager to jump to surgery right away, I needed to go home and sulk first! LOL We made another 4-month follow-up appointment, but in the meantime I can call anytime and schedule the surgery if I wish. Of course he said the sooner the better because her hearing isn't the best it could be in that ear, but it's not an emergency right now. The results just showed diminished hearing.

I know this isn't that big of a deal considering all the kids I know going through other medical issues, I know they would much rather be dealing with only ear tubes, really I do understand that.

I'm just frustrated that we'll have to go through this for a 4th time with the expectation it still won't be the last time, that her body will continue to spit those tubes out. He's going to try T tubes next time, if he can get them in, but who knows how long those will last.

Well the good news is I had a dental appt yesterday and no cavities! Yay! :)

don't worry you're not the only one in the tubes pity party. aaron HAS tubes but they can't be seen or are non-functioning because of too much junk, not in his trunk but in his ear. who knows how these kids pick up that crap anyway?!
lucky you to have no cavities! me too! of course I'd have to have real teeth right? :P

Oh I can totally understand how you must feel, it's still a surgery and it's something you were hoping was sorted out. I get a bit blah even when there are changes with my son's eyesight. I remember we had to patch one eye for over an hour per day for 3 months and when after a check up he needed that for another 3 months, I felt a bit flat - and that's something totally minor. It's that 'something extra' feeling. Great news about no cavities - yay!

Bummer that you'll have to go through it again... hope they'll "stick" this time. :o)

And any issue we deal with is a real issue, regardless of what others are dealing with or not dealing with, so don't feel like you have to put a disclaimer on your frustrations. You have every right to sulk about having to do this a 4th time!

We're on our 4th set of tubes, too. I've never heard of titanium ones, maybe I'll ask my ENT about those next go-round. And our last set only lasted 7 months. Here's hoping that she comes through the procedure with flying colors.

Aviva too lost a tube with in 8 months so you are not alone.

And good news on the no cavities.

How are you feeling these days?

So sorry Michelle - I'm sorry for Kayla too! Not a fun prospect for either of you two. I hope that these next tubes stay put!

I don't blame you for being frustrated, I would be too. No one likes to have their child go through a 4th time to have those tubes put in!! Good for you on having no cavities:-) xox

What a bummer...you have every right to be disappointed. Since only one has come out, will he only replace that one during surgery, or will he replace both? You'd really hate to have him only do one, and have the other one fall out soon after!

Grayson's having his tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy tomorrow. I'm a little anxious because I'm going to hate seeing him in pain and uncomfortable. Hopefully everything will go well, and he'll be up and around soon!

It's okay to sulk Michelle! Who wants to have to go through that so many times??? At least her dental went well. We have one coming up and I'm a little nervous. We have been more lax on helping Brenna brush and I'm afraid of what that may mean! Good luck with Kayla's ears, I hope they stay healthy until tubes are back in. Prayers for NO infections!

What a bugger the tube fell out!
Oh and Michelle,
Please dont ever feel guilty for feeling overwhelmed or worried about your child!! Who ever you are no matter how bad it is there will always be somebody worse off, and no matter how trivial the problem (may i add i dont think anything involving surgery is trivial )if it is relevent to you of course it will be a big problem!
I hope that the next set of tubes stay put for Kayla.
Great to hear you have no cavities! (i am terrified of dentists and must confess that i havnt been in 11years...)

HUGS! I can't imagine how frustrating that is...and any procedure like that is difficult on us parents. None of us want our children to endure such things once, much less over and over.
hugs for you and Kayla!

congrats on the teeth....mine went to pot when I was pregnant and couldn't brush without puking. argh...

Yeah no cavities! That is something to be happy about..:-)

I completely understand what you are talking about, when Nathan was sick and was in the hospital, it was serious (like Kayla's hearing is) but I felt guilty telling the other mom's what Nathan had when I knew that what he had was able to be corrected and some of the others were not as fortunate. Then I had a wise woman tell me that it is important because it is happening to us right now and that there is still stress with it no matter how little you make think it is, it is your child and no one wants to see them hurting.

So in saying that I hope that the doctor gets the T tubes in and when you decide to do the surgery again, I pray for a speedy recovery.

Oh my....I know how tough that surgery is to go through though, especially that waking up from the anesthetic part-ugh.I have done it twice and Kendall did not get tubes either time(ear canals too small). The first one was a failed insertion, the second was a T&A with a failed insertion.

Thats REALLY great that you have NO cavities!

Are they tubes because she gets infection in her ears? My niece had those when she was little, but she doesn't have them anymore. Will Kayla grow out of them?

Sorry about the tubes! Jasons have come out too and he's already had 3 ear infections. I'm afraid we're headed down the tube highway again too. I'm glad you were able to look on the bright side with your dental exam :)

Oh what a bummer. No one wants their little one going through anything like this. It is so hard sometimes to know what is the right thing to do. Alysa needs to have the upper endoscopy now - the camera down her throat b/c she doesn't gain weight. Kayla had it done twice. It means anesthesia, etc. It's always something!

My nephews had the same problem. I hope Kayla does well with her surgery. :o)

Poor Kayla...I never had to face this issue with my children. I hope it all works out!

Oh, I'd feel the same way...how frustrating! I really hope the next ones will work better...when the time comes, we'll have to really pray!

But yay, for no cavities! I wish I could say the same for my girls!

That IS a bummer about the tubes.. who wants to go through another surgery??!?! Maybe you can try a little SUper Glue adn see if it helps ;) LOL

Great about no cavaties! And bummer about Kayla's tubes. That poor kid! But you know she's better WITH the tubes so it's something she just has to get done. Still...I hate it for her and for you! Hope it's over quickly and hope the new tubes last much, much longer!

Amy Flege said...

yippy on NO cavities!!!! sorry about the tubes. so far we havent had to go that route. sit and sulk a bit before you make the appointment so maybe you can feel better!! hee hee

You don't sound ungrateful at all! That is an expensive and redundant little excursion, getting those tubes inserted over and over again. And any health issue IS a big deal when it's our own child. No matter how big or small, we don't like for them to have to endure anything that makes them uncomfortable. No need for comparisons. :) I hope the procedure goes smoothly when you are ready.
