Annual Buddy Walk

For those who were reading my blog last year you might remember this post describing the Buddy Walk and then the post recapping our walk.

For readers who aren't familiar with what a Buddy Walk is, here is a brief explanation.

It is the premier fundraising effort from the National Down Syndrome Society. It started in 1995 and the mission is to raise money, awareness, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. It is a wonderful event to attend and meet other families while raising money for a great cause.

On Oct 6 we will be attending our 5th Buddy Walk (and the first one Joe will miss!) We've gone every year since Kayla wasn't quite 3 months old!

Here is a photo of our group last year:

Two of those families have moved, so we won't have much of a group this year, but we'll still have fun!

Every year we've been able to suprpass the goal we set for raising funds for the walk; we've been so blessed with wonderful support from our family and friends. I was overwhelmed last year when several bloggers sponsored us as well!

This year our local group has set-up an online fundraising site which I'm excited about. It makes it so much easier to donate and keep track of everything. Here is the link for Kayla's fundraising site.

PS - Laura - just wanted to let you know I didn't forget about the donation you sent me many months ago to go towards this year's Buddy Walk! I've included it in the amount raised offline :)

You can be sure I'll have pictures to post when we get back from our Walk in a few weeks!

I hope this year's buddy walk is fantastic! I'm sure it will seem so different without Joe this year - I think about you both and pray for you often.

I've been reading your blog for several weeks now. I have a 14 year old niece who has DS she is a delight! We attend her Buddy Walk every year and have a blast! The OK Buddy Walk will be on September 29th we're looking forward to walking again this year. I have several pictures just like the one you posted of my siblings and their families all in Buddy Walk t-shirts!

Just wanted to comment on yesterday's blog, but don't know if you go back and check comments or not so thought I'd leave it today. I thought yesterday's blog was awesome. I also would like you to pass on my thanks to your husband and others that are serving in the military. Also, thank you for your amazing strength in supporting your husband and raising a family. Military families have it really rough and I admire them for everything they are able to accomplish.

I have given you another award, and you so deserve this. You are a ray of sunshine to so many, and bring a smile to those who aren't always feeling like smiling, until they read your blog :-)

What a great time of year to have the walk with the cooler weather. This year may be my very first time to go with an old friend of mine whose daughter has DS. I'm not sure yet, but I hope we get to hook up. Whether that happens or not, you can be sure I'll be thinking of Kayla!

Stella and I are doing the Buddy Walk for the first time this year! I'm sure it will be a great experience--we will be thinking of our friends in other cities!

Our Buddy Walk is Oct 13. I just found out that it is only the 3rd one that the local group (DSIA) has put on so that means we've been to them all. The Biscuit was only 4 months old for that first one... the age his sister is now.

I was really happy that last year they got connected with a company that allows you to register your team and collect donations online. That's such an easier way for the relatives that live far away to contribute to the cause in our son's name.

Woo-hoo to Buddy Walks!
