Mommy Talk

Before I get to this week's question, I just wanted to give an update on Kayla. We did take her in yesterday as soon as the urgent care clinic opened. The verdict: More than likely strep. Poor kid. The doctor didn't want to put Kayla through the swab test; she didn't feel it was necessary. Based on her symptoms, how her throat looked ("her throat is nasty-red looking") and that her "breath smelled like strep" (I didn't realize strep had a distinctive smell) she was going to treat her for strep and prescribed an antibiotic. We headed to Walgreens to fill the prescription yesterday so hopefully she's on the way to feeling better!

She's been feeling miserable and I can't blame her. A few years ago I had strep and it was absolutely awful trying to swallow. She's hardly been eating or drinking anything since Thur and it's hard to watch her refuse whatever we offer. She was the same when she first woke up this morning. I could see it was hurting her to swallow and her mouth is so dry. About an hour or so after I gave her the Ibuprofen she actually asked me for eggs!

Me, "You want eggs?"
K, "Yeah"
M, "Are you actually going to eat them?"
K, "Noooo"
M, "Kayla do you want eggs?"
K, "Yeah"
M, "Will you eat them?"
K, "No."
M, "Do you want eggs for breakfast?"
K, "Yeah."
M, "ok then."

She did eat almost 2 scrambled eggs and asked for refills on her milk. I just hope she'll continue to drink throughout the day and eat something for lunch and dinner.

This is the last week of the Mommy Talk questions - I've enjoyed reflecting back on my pregnancy and early newborn days with Kayla!

Here is the last question, "Grandparents: what is their relationship with your child(ren) and how do they fit into your child's life?"

Unfortunately we don't live close enough to any sets of grandparents to see them on a regular basis and I wish we did so they would be able to see each other more often! As it is Kayla sees her grandparents maybe 2x a year. Despite the distance I do have to say that she is one very loved, and spoiled!, grandchild!

I hope Kayla feels better. Today.

My 2-year old is not sick (thank God) but he's favorite word nowadays is no.

"It's time to eat," I tell him. "Let's wash our hands, OK?"

"No," my 2-year old would say.

"Why not?" I ask. "You don't want to get sick, right?"

"No."

"So let's wash our hands."

"No," my 2-year old again said.

This goes on for a minute or two.

Then my 4-year old can't take it any longer.

"Daddy," my 4-year old said. "When he says NO, he means no. But when he says no, he means yes."

Uh-huh.

Have a great week.

I hope she feels better soon. Sore throats and not swallowing are two awful things to combine.

My doc told me to look for white spots in the back of the throat and along the gums. I'd never heard of strep having a smell before. When people are sick they do sometimes smell different due to their being a chemical difference in their body but specifically strep, I've learned something there. Although since my stepson got his tonsils out last year we haven't seen any strep in a while....knock on wood...

The antibiotics should do the trick...I've had strep throat once and never want it again so it's understandable how miserable she has been feeling!! Please give her a big hug for me:-) xox

I'll not enter your Dog Days Contest because I'm not giving anything away myself.

Just posted your book this morning and there is a wee something else in there too. Hope it reaches you soon. My daughter has had a similar throat thingy, she's getting a lot better now and is eating properly again. It's hard work putting all these meals on the table to be met with lots of resistance, but my Miss E was obviously in more pain than I'd realised. Poor girl.

Poor sick little munchkin.
We live in the same town as my parents, which is both good AND bad. My in-laws live 20 minutes away, so my kids' lives are FULL of grandkids!

Happy to hear she is on the mend.

Aviva too gets to see her grandparents 2 to 3 times a year. She misses grandpa a whole lot.

I'm glad your doc had the smarts to call it strep without a swab test. Kayla finally started cooperating with the doctor, the last thing you want to do is scare her! Hope she's feeling better soon.

Poor Little Kayla with strep. I'm glad she at the eggs. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in quick and she'll be on the mend soon!

It stinks to live far from family. Luckily love can be felt long distance! :)

We are fortunate to live 5 miles from both sets of grandparents. One set works full time and they love to care for Jonas on weekends which gives me a break and I get to do errands baby free! (those are Joe's parents) My dad works and my mom stays at home. However, everything has to be scheduled for her and asking for spur of the moment baby sitting usually doesn't work. My dad is a complete goof ball and wonderful with children. He works long hours so we only get to see him on weekends too. I try to see my mom at least once through the week. I've never had to have a "stranger" babysit Jonas. That has been a wonderful thing have family close by.
