It's time for O Mama Mia's weekly Show Me Yours & I'll Show You Mine!
Show Me Your Green Thumb. Soil, water, sunshine, love… that’s what this week’s theme is made of. Outdoors or in, whether it blooms and grows beneath your watchful eye and nurturing touch…. or just plain exists at the bare threshold of greenness…. Show Me!!
So green thumb huh? Or in my case, lack thereof! I wish, wish, WISH! I had a green thumb! I walk around base and see all these houses that have wonderful flower beds/gardens/pots and it looks so nice, but I'm clueless when it comes to gardening! I don't know where to start, what to do, what to grow, or how to take care of it. It's either too much water, not enough water, too much sun, too much shade, or too little sun or shade!
But my hubby is really good at growing grass! I take no credit for our nice green backyard, but here's a pictorial of how it came to be.
When we moved in last summer there were patches of grass, weeds, dirt, dried out & dead areas. It looked like this:
By December it was mostly brown and dirt and dried up
At Easter there was some green coming back through, this was probably the last time we could actually go in the backyard. Joe then tilled up the whole backyard - even the areas that did actually have patches of grass. Should have taken before and after pictures! It was all just dirt. He planted grass seed (thank goodness it's free from the Self Help store on base!) and mulch and all that stuff. Then he watered, watered, and watered some more.
Finally we could do this in our backyard! We had grass!
And it's nice, thick, lush green grass not full of weeds like when we moved in! This picture doesn't do it justice, but here it is!

WOW! I'm impressed! Can I borrow your husband briefly? I promise, a hands-off policy. Maybe it has something to do with going to sea, or with growing up in the Arizona desert, but my husband is clueless when it comes to the yard!
Man I soooooo dont have a green thumb but I have tried-but I have killed an azalea, dont know if I overwatered or planted it in the wrong spot or what but it is bad!Beautiful Backyard!
this post would not have beem complete if Kayla were not in those pictures. I think that grass grows because it knows she's walking there.
Oooo he really does have a green thumb! That yard looks amazing!
What a difference a little love and care can do:-) Your hubby did a wonderful job getting that grass to grow...also love seeing Kayla playing on it at all it's stages:-)
Wow! What a amazing difference. You're husband's definitely got a green thumb. And your daughter has a green backyard thanks to that thumb. Good job, hubby!
Your backyard looks great! I have onerubber tree plant that I haven't killed. . .yet.
Michelle, I got so tickled looking at the pics when you said your husband was good with grass, I saw those familiar patches that look like my yard, hehe and I thought...hmmm, but then in scrolling down ~ wow! It's not easy to get grass to grow from seed it looks great! Very nice!
its a beautiful yard!!! Kayla looks very happy with it!!! lol. Seriously..hubby did a great job!
I wish I could get grass to grow in our back yard!! It is COMPLETELY dead! We had grass when we moved in but it wasn't all that great and we didn't water at all in our backyard and plus the dogs have decided that they are going to dig a hole to china so it has killed the grass LOL!
BEAUTIFUL! And may I say that you have a huge backyard! And for base-housng? that's gi-normous!! I want one of those rocket sprinkler thingies, too, but DT doesn't carry them anymore :(
Thank you for playing!!
That looks awesome! Way to GROW!
Your yard looks great! That's the kind of yard to lay in at night at look at stars. I too don't have a green thumb. The extent of my green thumb is picking out flowers that i like and my husband plants them and waters them.
What beautiful results in your back yard! And your yard is so big compared to ours. :) Good job, Joe and Michelle!
Grass is on our project list too. We are going to instant-turf it. It is a disaster at the moment, but I want it nice for Sheena's 1st birthday party
