Medal Of Honor

Last weekend we went to Patriot's Point. More on that in another post. One of the exhibits is the Medal of Honor Museum.

It is a pretty humbling experience walking through the museum and reading about recipients of the nation's highest award for military valor. Those who have shown the ultimate acts of bravery and courage.

Unfortunately, having our kids with us we weren't able to take the time we wanted to really walk through and read about their stories. But that was to be expected; they aren't at an age where they understand the significance of this kind of museum.

Earlier this week I heard about an Oscar-nominated documentary called "Restrepo."

"RESTREPO is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, "Restrepo," named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. This is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the soldiers; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats. The only goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment."

Here is a trailer. Reminder: this is live, this is real, this is war, unedited - there is some language.

From that I became aware of The Sal Giunta Story. Sal Giunta received the Medal of Honor for his heroic role in what happened at Korengal Valley. It's 14 minutes long, but well worth the time to watch it. And if you're emotional like I am, you might want to have a couple of tissues handy.
