You Have To Let Go

Last week I came across a video clip of a talk show from England (I think!). This clip is about a married couple. They both have Down syndrome. Both of their mothers were interviewed as well. They talked about how marriage is working out for them. They have jobs and live independently with some support systems/personnel in place to assist with some tasks.

It was so sweet to watch this couple talk about their lives and love for each other. I wish them much happiness and many years together.

While watching the video two quotes stuck with me. Esme was asked about her feelings for Guy and how she felt about marriage. Her reply, "My heart is full of magic."

"My heart is full of magic." What a beautiful way to put it!

The other quote came from Guy's mother. She was asked if she ever thought her son would be living on his own and married; what she imagined his future would be etc. In talking about raising him and preparing him for life she said, "You have to let go to see what they are capable of."

"You have to let go to see what they are capable of." How wise! I've always said that I/we are raising Kayla to be as independent and capable as she can be. That we'll do what we need to do to help her reach her fullest potential, but I know and realize that it won't always be easy. I know I'll need to be doing a lot of letting go and trusting that we're doing the right things.

And for those times when I'll be hesitant to let go, because I know there will be times like that, this will be my mantra. I'll just keep reminding myself, "You have to let go to see what she is capable of." Because if I don't let go, how will I ever know what she's truly capable of.

Check out Guy and Esme's love story:

I came across this same clip.......and I loved it!! Very wise words to "remember". I agree, Michelle, it is going to be hard.......but aren't we advocating for a reason?! When the time comes.....I will rejoice in knowing that I did ALL that I could to help Landon! Another goal to celebrate:) Just remember, when times get tough.....we will have the best support system to help us through!!!

That's really beautiful Michelle. Hard for all of us to do, but so wise.

Those are some very inspirational quotes! I think you definitely are raising an independent gal and I have no doubt she'll reach her full potential!

Thank you for sharing. I can't find it myself but I so want to share it with my dear husband. I love forward to the day my buggie can be married and live HER life. We already know they can do it. It's shows like this one that let others see what we already know.

Many days are exercises in letting go for me, especially as I drop my son off at his school where he is the only one with special needs. Yikes!

Hi! I came across your blog via another blogger's list and I am so happy I did. I lost my only daughter in utero at six months due to complications arising from Trisomy 21. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her, but I know she will always be with me. The picture of your daughter at the top of the blog took my breath away as she is so beautiful and looks so very happy. She has amazing potential, and I really do hope she finds that feeling of 'magic' one day just like Esme :) Now a loyal follower, Lynn 1busychick.blogspot.com

Thanks for sharing this....gives me so much hope. Such a good happy feeling. Yes we have to learn to let go when the time is right to truely understand what our children are capable of.
