Sometimes You Gotta Believe

I was walking out of the grocery store with Kayla when she stopped to look around. I noticed the guy who walked out behind us was pretty tall, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, and had a pretty good-size beard.

Kayla noticed the beard.

And she thought it was him.

She turned around, waved, and said 'hi Santa' then turned back around and continued walking with me. She was so non-chalant about it too. She didn't make a big deal out of it; she didn't jump up and down and get all excited and scream 'there's Santa!' No, it was like it was perfectly within reason to expect to see Santa coming out of the grocery store on a nice spring day. She just said 'hi' to him like it was an every day occurrence.

I smiled and chuckled to myself. I don't think he heard her since he was on the phone.

He was parked in the same general area as I was and I saw him unload his groceries in his red truck not thinking anything more about it.

After getting Kayla all buckled in I walked back around the van, got in the driver's seat, looked behind me as I started to reverse ... and that's when I noticed it.

Something about his truck caught my eye and I had to look again.

On the back window in big sticker/window-cling letters was the word Believe.

On the right-hand side of the bottom of the window was a red license plate with white letters.

The word on the license plate? None other than SANTA.

I couldn't believe my eyes. What are the odds?

I had to laugh. Then Kayla started laughing and asking me "what mommy? what?" She wanted to know what was so funny.

I told her, "Oh my gosh Kayla you were right! That was Santa!"

Sometimes you just gotta believe.

That is AWESOME! I love how she didn't even flinch, not even thinking that it might NOT be him. She saw him. It WAS him. Simple as that. "Hi Santa!" Perfect. :o)

That's the most awesome story I've heard in a very long time! Sometimes I guess we all just need to see things through the eyes of a child to get it right. Thanks so much for sharing this, Michelle!

That's an awesome story. My older kids still have wonderful memories or seeing Santa at his vacation home on Kelley's Island. It HAD to have been him. ;)

Hello Michelle,
I have been reading your blog for quite some time (love it!). I also have a daughter with Ds, Lily, she is almost 4. Anyway, I don't normally comment, but I love this post. I believe children have an extra sense, that we maybe don't have, and it is beautiful. Thanks for writing! Your family is beautiful!
