Locked Out...or In...

...depending on which side of the door you're on!

Lucas and I had some fun one morning last week.

We stopped by Chick-Fil-A to get their free Thursday morning breakfast item and then we were on our way to Andrews, AFB...except things didn't go that smoothly.

As we were getting back in the van I threw the keys on the floor so I could put Lucas in his car seat. I was also distracted as I was on the phone with my mom so I didn't pay much attention to the fact that Lucas grabbed the keys.

As I got him in the seat he pushed the button to close the door and I backed out of the way so the door could close. Then I was going to reopen it so I could buckle him in and be on our way.

Except almost as soon as I heard the door latch shut I heard that unmistakable 'click' of the doors locking.

Lucas had pressed the button to lock all the doors. Of course.

There I am standing outside the van looking at him thinking, 'oh my goodness, I'm out here without the keys and he's locked in there with the keys.' S0 he starts pushing buttons on the remote, but of course he pushes every button except the unlock button.

I tell him to go get in mommy's seat and he's looking at me like he can't believe I'm telling him to get out of his seat and go to the front, but he does it. I kept pointing at the lever to lift up and unlock the door, but he thought I was just pointing at the glass on the window and he pointed back at my finger. He knew I was trying to get him to let me in because he kept trying the door handle as well.

He went to the backseat again and grabbed the keys and brought them to the driver's seat, but still, his finger just wouldn't push the unlock button.

He finally got tired of trying to unlock the door and had fun playing with all the buttons and knobs on the dashboard...and ignored his mom standing outside knocking on the window saying "Lucas, Lucas!"

In the mean time I had called my mom back, knowing she was heading my way, and thankfully she hadn't left the house yet...so she was able to bring me the spare set of keys.

I was just glad Lucas didn't find the 'panic' button on the remote! Poor kid would have been stuck in the van with that horn blaring!

Lesson learned ... either teach Lucas which button unlocks the doors...or make sure he never has the keys in his little hands again!

Cute story!! I put the keys on the floor of the car as I am buckling in my little ones too. Thanks for the warning:) Very good idea to teach them where the unlock button is. But then again, you don't want to teach them too much, next time he might go for a joy ride:) Ha! I'm so happy that everyone was OK:)

I laughed and laughed! I'll have to keep this in mind for the future. Things to teach Marissa, "the unlock button" :-)

Yikes I can just picture you there trying to point at the lock and him pointing back! Not funny at the time, but hilarious now!

Oh my gosh, I am never going to set the keys down again, I do that all the time when I am putting Sam in his carseat. My sister actually did that once and her little boy was snapped into his car seat and couldn't get it undone because it was to hard and it was in the middle of summer. We almost had to break the window to get in as he was starting to sweat. Glad your Mom was able to come to the rescue

Good warning! I also set my keys down, but I usually set them on the roof, just in case (at least you can't drive off and leave your car keys on your roof!). That's such a huge fear of mine. Glad it worked out well!

That scares every mom, I'm sure! So glad it worked out where you were able to get to him. Why is it they push all the buttons, except the ones we want them to push?

Teach him how to unlock. The keys will land back into his hands again.

Great thing that he didn't panic! Funny story!

How can such a scary story be so funny! I've done that before, luckily when K was a bit older! Oh that single moment of realization!
