Kayla has trouble enunciating the letter "L" ... she doesn't put her tongue up behind her top teeth, instead it stays down on the bottom of her mouth.
So "like" comes out as 'yike.'
Which also means she can't pronounce "Lucas" correctly either. It usually sounds like "Gucas." I try to reminder her (most of the time) to say "Lucas" and when she stops and concentrates she'll put her tongue up and she'll say "Lucas." However, 9 times out 10 "Gucas" most easily flows out of her mouth.
I noticed over the past week or so she's been self-correcting on her own, without anyone else saying anything to her. I hear her in the other room saying "Gucas" ... "Lucas" and now maybe 5 out 5 times she'll actually say "Lucas" correctly the first time. I'm sure it won't be too long before "Lucas" flows out of her mouth naturally 100% of the time.
I can't tell you how exciting it is to hear her doing this on her own...how hard she's working at enunciating that L sound. I keep telling her how proud I am of her saying "Lucas."
Now if she could just enunciate the "L" in her own name! People think her name is "Kay-ah" when they ask her what her name is.

So exciting! She has so much determination.
Speech is so hard for our kids, isn't it? Gabriel still will not make the "s", "sh", "ch", "tr" sounds at all.
Knowing that Kayla is now aware of the sound, and self correcting is really awesome!, I bet you are right. In no time, she'll have mastered that tricky sound! I'm sure, too, that she'll be saying her name properly too, very soon!
I wanted to ask you if Lucas is still interested in the potty? Is he pursuing it still?
My daughter struggles with L and has one in her name, too. K- is in speech therapy, so I understand the excitement over small pronunciations. We're waiting for 'yike' to turn into 'like.'
Hooray for Kayla!
woohoo! go kayla! One of my campers called our lucas "yoo-cas" all summer. and my sister Sasha? Well, shes pretty well known as either "sha sha" or "chacha" at camp. But one of my kids, the first time I said her name stopped, processed and then went "SA.Sha" He has had a lot of ST and I could see those gears turning as he thought about how to say her name.
She's going to conquer that soon with that kind of determination -
What an awesome accomplishment! Way to go Kayla!!
That's so awesome - way to go Kayla!!
That's great! It won't be long until she's saying the l in Kayla too I bet. Hannah is finally putting the 'h' in her name - otherwise people tend to think she's saying "Anna"
My daughter is 25 and still struggles with speech. I wish the state would continue funding speech therapy for adults, but it ends when they graduate from high school. I'm excited to hear your daughter is correcting herself! Yea Kayla!!!
That is so so fantastic, it's great because obviously she knows what she's doing wrong and trying her very best to correct herself, that is amazing!! She is such a wonderful little girl, you must be so proud of her. Way to go kayla, and don't worry at this rate she is going to get her name right before you know it!
That's great! The L sound is such a hard one. I love that she can self correct herself!
Hooray for Kayla! Hard work always pays off in the end! I'm sure it's music to your ears Michelle!
It has been awhile since I visited yours (or anyones) blogs- I know - shame on me so it has been nice to catch up. That is awesome about Kayla. I remember all the years I spent in speech therapy as a child. I've also been keeping your Dad in my prayer. My Dad suffered the same cancer and my heart and prayers are with you. Enjoyed the pics of Kayla and Lucas. They are growing so fast. Have a great weekend!
love when all the hard work pays off. Way to go Kayla!!!
That's great news!! Go, Kayla! L is a seriously tough one.
That's excellent. I recently read that the "l" sound is very hard for many typical kids, too, so the fact that she is self-correcting is even more exciting. I"m sure Gugas will appreciate it, too. :-)
Speech Path here. Congrats on the initial L in Lucas. That is a toughie. Just as an FYI, typically the medial sound (Kayla) is the last to develop. Natural order of progression is initial sound, final sound, then the medial sound. Motivation and personal connection are huge factors! I bet it develops quickly as she is aware, motivated, self monitors, and self-corrects. Go Kayla!!!
oooo that is super exciting!
