My Youngest Brother

When I was 10 years old my dad and (now former) step-mom had a son. I already had 2 brothers so I really wanted a sister, but was excited nonetheless when Steven was born :)

I don't remember all the details, but there were complications at his birth. I remember the first time seeing him in the hospital - he looked so tiny there in the bassinet - and it seemed like there were wires everywhere (I think he had an oxygen tube and monitors). I started crying; I just wasn't sure what was happening or what would happen. Whatever the issues were at birth, everything turned out fine and he came home...and I loved being a 'little mother' at 10 years helping out with my baby brother.

8 months after I graduated high school I moved to Maryland to live with my mom and step-dad. I saw my brother over the next few years when I would go back to NJ to visit. During that time my father and Steven's mother divorced and eventually Steven and his mom moved back to NY.

I don't remember the last time I saw Steven before he moved to NY, but it's probably been close to 13 years...yes THIRTEEN years since I saw my youngest brother! It's unthinkable to me that so many years passed without siblings seeing each other, but I lived in CO and NM for the past 11 years and only made it to the east coast a few times during those years. We've kept in touch over those years; just hadn't seen each other!

Well this Thanksgiving my brother, his wife, and youngest daughter drove from NY to FL to visit our dad. On their way back to NY they stopped by here for an overnight visit.

I can't even describe how wonderful it was to see my 'little' brother again after all these years! Their youngest daughter, Olivia, is only 4 months older than Lucas...so it was really nice for the cousins to get to play together too.

How nice to see your brother after so long. It's hard when divorce enters in. I am so glad you have both kept in touch though even if you haven't been able to see each other for years. What a special bond you much have.

Gosh, that's a long time not to see one another. I'm so glad you all had a fun time. I hope you'll be able to see each other more often in the future.

How great must that have been. Nothing like connecting with your sibling, especially after not seeing each other for 13 years. The kids seem to be getting along really well, love the picture of them all riding on your brothers back. Really lovely pictures
