The Specials

I think I first heard about The Specials from Lee at My Life With Gabriel ... and now I'm hooked!

The Specials is an internet-broadcast docu-soap about 5 housemates in England. Sam, Hilly, Lucy, and Megan have Down syndrome and Lewis has Williams syndrome. 4 of them attend college and 1 works. It's a peek in to their lives following them as they go to school, work, out on the town (karaoke and dancing seem to be favorites!) and dealing with relationship issues.

Here is episode 1:

You can view episodes 1-9 to get caught up (episode 10 of season 1 will be out today) and they are short clips - 8-14 min long (leaves you wanting more!)

This is a great 'series' and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this group!

12 Days Of Giving: Day 5 - Kayla's school had a Winter Wonderland and a couple Marines were there collecting for Toys for Tots, so we gave a new toy to them. Day 6 - I gave my kids the gift of fun :) We went to La Plata's "Olde Tyme Holiday Gathering" for a train ride, face painting, crafts, story time etc.

Finally. LOL Your blog keeps freezing on me and I haven't been able to comment. I'll have to check out "The Specials" I have heard of it before but have never really watched it.
The photo of Kayla at the top with the fairy wings is so precious. Well all your pics are but that one is extra precious :)

I am really amazed by how other countries seem to handle DS so much differently than we Americans. I hope that in the future more American families will do their best to equip them to live independently and lead as normal a life as possible. I worry that we are sorely behind on giving these children and adults a fighting chance at having a "normal" life. It makes me so happy to see parents that refuse to accept less for their children just because they are told to do so. I love hearing about people that are given "worse odds" than the average person rising above it and living a happy and complete life without being seperated, and discriminated against based solely on prior assumptions.

Thank you for sharing with us.

I discovered The Specials a few months ago through Facebook friends, and have been in love with them all ever since! I am so anxious to see the next episode!!! Sam is just adorable and I would so love to paint the town red with him!

Michelle, I am so happy that you've posted about The Specials. You have a lot of people who visit and love your blog, and The Specials really deserve recognition.

Did you watch the final episode? Oh my heart broke over Sam!

Anyway, I think the film makers are trying to raise funds for season two by selling The Specials t-shirts, and other gift items if anyone wants to buy!

I love this show so much. I don't have any interaction with young adults who have Ds, much like other parents I bet, and I think this glimpse into the future helps me to believe that Gabe will have a place in this world like any other young man.

I'll have to come back later when I have a little more time and watch.
