It's Signed!

President Bush has signed into law the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (co-sponsored by Senators Kennedy and Brownback) which authorizes the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a grant program to collect and disseminate information regarding Down syndrome.

Information from the National Down Syndrome Congress: This bill is designed to improve information and increase referral to support services for parents receiving a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome and other conditions. When signed, the bill became Public Law 110-374. The next step is to get funds appropriated to implement this law when Congress reconvenes next year.

This is a great step forward in getting updated, accurate, and balanced information to doctors to have when they deliver the news to parents that their child has Down syndrome, or any pre- or postnatally diagnosed condition.

Patricia Bauer has a great article on the implications of this Act.

What better time for this to be passed then during Down Syndrome Awareness Month?

Oh that is absolutely wonderful! Perhaps, Canada will now be more motivated to ensure the same!

That. Is. Awesome.

I'm just so frustrated that it had to become a law for this to happen.

This is THE best thing I've heard all day (week, year)! But I do agree with Karen.

WOOOOO HOOOOO! Something had to happen to help with all of the "new and improved" (tongue-in-cheek) pre-natal testing. Thanks for posting this. I did the same.
