Kayla's Preschool Program

A few months ago Kayla came home from school and started singing a song about fish and a whale and OH NO! complete with hand motions. I had no idea what song she was singing so I sent a note home to her teacher asking what they were singing in class so I could look it up and sing with her. Her teacher sent me a CD with 5 songs and said they were learning these for their end-of-year preschool program.

I played the CD and watched Kayla sing along, loudly, and perform the motions for the songs. I couldn't wait until the program because she seemed really into it and enjoyed these songs.

The program was Friday morning (before we left on our 9+ hour drive to San Antonio). The kids were so cute up there on stage performing for all the parents.

Here's Kayla walking up the aisle to the stage (and being distracted by a lady off to the side, she had to wave and say "hi!").

Here she is during one of the few times she actually participated! As much as she enjoyed singing these songs at home I don't think she quite knew what to think being up there on stage staring out at all the parents! She would either stand there, or she was turned around looking at the kids behind her. Joe and I just shook our heads and smiled.

Here's a little video clip, I tried to get the times when she was actually performing :) (I don't know who she was pointing to near the end of the video; it wasn't us as we were on the other side of the room.)

At the end of the program they called each child up to get their certificate and a little goody bag. I absolutely love this picture of Kayla. (Click on it to enlarge). She spotted Joe and started waving while calling out "hi daddy!" I love how she's up on her toes, is stretched as tall as she can be, and has the biggest smile on her face.

Here is her teacher...

And one of the teacher assistants in the room...

Thanks for all the advice and "been there done that" experiences everyone shared with me regarding sending her to Kindergarten. There are pros and cons for going to preschool another year, as well as sending her on to K. Her teacher thinks she is ready to go on to K but did have some concerns with her attention span. We're all on the same page though that she'll go into K with the possibility of repeating next year. At least this year she'll be there and get to know the routines and what is expected, so if she does repeat she'll be familiar with it all.

Her IEP is Friday and I'll find out more at that time when we actually meet with the K teacher.

Very cute. And she did really well with the songs! William was like a stonefaced statue during his school performance last year.

the pre k program of Kayla and classmates is a classic!! Loved the t-shirts and the BIG sunglasses!! Hey, the boy behind Kayla was singing so loud and drowning out Kayla's voice she had to turn around to see what was going on behind her!! :)

What a nice B'day present for Joe that day when his daughter was waving to him, stretched to her limits and SMILING at her dad!!

Most kids (and adults) have short attention spans!!! She will eventually get the "hang of things"

Your 1st graduation ceremony!! and many more to come!! :) love grandma/mom

She looks like a rock star caught walking in to her premier!
My daughter had difficulty sitting thru some of the group focused activities but does better with focuser's like coloring in her hand or gum, if they allow such things. The other thing she used was the para would take her out for 5 minutes and run her around/play something physical with her and then she could go back and sit some more!
I find that she can sit through almost anything if she has paper and writing/coloring tools in hand- church services, lectures, car trips!I think it's a sensory integrator of some kind?

Those are wonderful pictures! She's precious alright! And her Hi Daddy photo! Priceless!!
I'm glad you don't have to agonize over that K situation. For us it was the best thing I did for Aaron.

I love that pic of Kayla on her toes too. I don't think Nate has ever "fully" participated in one of his school programs. Sometimes he gets bored and sits, other times he doesn't sing at all while every other kid is singing loudly and having fun. Rhi is the same way. She'll do all the moves, but she looks so completely unenthusiastic while she does them that I think why didn't she just pretend to be sick? She's obviously not having fun. At least Kayla looks like she's having a good time!!

That is just the cutest. You can tell she really likes her teachers. I'm glad you made a decision. It's easier to deal with it once your mind is made up. And it's good to know you have the option of keeping her back next year.

She is just SO cute! And they're getting so big...our girls. We worried about sending Brenna too, for a lot of the same reasons. She gets so emotional and struggles with attention too at times. But I can't picture a 3rd year of preschool either. Especially not with all of her friends going on. Some of them will be in her class at school. We decided to send her in the fall. I guess I haven't written about it much here, because I was afraid if I wrote about it, that I'd second-guess myself. I think I finally feel okay with it, and know that we're doing the right thing.
The pictures of the program are great - thanks for sharing them! We just went to B's luau graduation party tonight. They are just so darn cute at this age! (And exhausting...)

I love the picture of her waving. She looks so proud of herself, which is the point, right? Congratulations on finishing PreK and I think you have the absolute right mindset about Kindergarten. Even if she does it over next year, she will know the routine. Now you can put that worry to rest & enjoy your summer.

That picture of her waving to her dad is priceless. She is such a Miss Personality and so very photogenic! Don't you just love how you never know what a preschooler will do during a performance? I'm glad she was excited about it and the videos were so cute. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful daughter with us. I don't know how it's possible to bond with a child you don't even know, but I feel like I've become one of Kayla's cheerleaders through your blog. I just love to come here and see her pictures and read what you write.

Wow Michelle Kayla did fantastic. Chanelle has never been a performer. She had her X-mas concert in kindergarten she sang her little heart out at home but on stage not a sound or movement. Actually same thing for her ballet recitals. Deer in the headlights. LOL
I think repeating kindergarten makes more sense than repeating pre-school. Not sure how it will play out for Tristan this year but he is starting at a new pre-school this year. He has been in an adapted one since 2 and this will be his first year with typical children. I am a little scared but know it is what is best for him. So far the plan is to start kindergarten September 2009 as typically scheduled with the possibilty of him doing it for 2 years if nessesary. I look forward in hearing all about Kayla's success in kindergarten she is an inspiration and offers me support when I get nervous. Thanks Kayla :)
