for Joe anyway!
There was a USO tour this week and Lance Armstrong was among the group who went. The others were Robin Williams, Kid Rock, Miss USA, and Lewis Black (another comedian).
Joe is a huge Lance Armstrong fan...road biking is one of his hobbies (and I know he's missing not being able to ride!). When he first wanted to buy a road bike and told me how much it cost I was stunned - for a bike?! Seriously? I had no idea they were so expensive...and then all the accessories to go along with it. Special wheels and frames and what not. So I used to tease him about thinking he was going to race the Tour de France one day.
So to hear that Lance was going to be at his location was very exciting news indeed! He was able to shake his hand and get a autograph, at the expense of snubbing Robin Williams no less!
I won't be able to tell the story as well as Joe did, but it was too funny not to share, and I'm sure he knew this would make it to my blog :)
They were told there actually wasn't going to be any time for autographs, but you're not really going to be able to stop people from trying; and most people were getting autographs - albeit very quickly! They took the troops up on the stage in groups of 20 for a group picture with them standing behind the celebrities. Then they would herd you off the stage telling you to hurry and move on. Joe had his hat off to hand over for an autograph and started to say "Mr." but before he could finish Robin Williams grabbed his hat from him and Joe said something like, "oh I was going to ask Mr. Armstrong for his autograph." and Robin said "ok" and passed the hat to Lance. Joe realized what he just said and how it came out and felt so embarrassed! He told Robin, "but I want your autograph too" and was stuttering out an apology when Robin just laughed and told him it was ok and not a problem and he understood.
I told Joe I couldn't believe he pretty much told Robin Williams he didn't want his autograph! I asked if he got his autograph after getting his hat back and he said he couldn't, there just wasn't time. After he got off the stage he stood there thinking, "I can't believe I just dissed Robin Williams like that!" Hahaha...it all happened so quickly though and I know given a choice of getting just one autograph Joe would really want Lance's. I couldn't stop laughing at the image of him telling Robin it was Lance's autograph he wanted, although he would have got both if he had the time.
Here is the group picture: It's actually a pretty big size picture where you can see everyone up close, if you click on it maybe it'll be bigger. Joe is last guy on the left standing up behind the guy kneeling down.
So I guess this has made the whole deployment worthwhile now!

OH michelle that is sooooooooo funny and awesome all at the same time. I really think it is wonderful those that donate their time to travel to see the troops. what a blessing.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks for sharing.
I have to chuckle over Joe's passing of Robin Williams for Lance Armstrong. My husband, who cycles to and from work, but who also loves Armstrong, would have done the exact same thing! Great pic! I also chuckled over Kid Rock's presence! What an odd combination of celebrities!
HAHA That is so funny!!! Joe is so innocent in his thinking ... too cute!
I wonder Lance and Kid Rock?!?! Both hooked up with Sheryl Crow at one point or another ... hehe
Only our son !!LOL!!! Joe sent me that picture at work and I have proudly made it my desktop background. I don't point out the celebs I just point out Joe :-)
That's so funny!! J. just told me about meeting Joe! It's funny because J. keeps getting razzed by his buddies because he got to escort Miss USA around for part of the time and there are so many pics of him with her. I told him I'm proud :)
Poor Joe! His big moment with Lance has to be over shadowed with his dis of Robin. I'd have dissed Robin too :) I'd have ran over all of them for Kid Rock, but that's just me :) At least there is something over there to put a smile on their faces. Kudos to all the celebs who take the time to do that. Praying that all of our men and women are safe.
I loved the picture!!
LOL! That is too funny!
Merry Christmas, we're off to Ohio for the week!
thanks for sharing Joe's stuttering out an apology... that was so classic!!! loved it....what a guy.... :) I am glad they had a chance at a USO tour in his neck of the woods... what a great christmas surprise.... what fun...loved the pic.... love mom
That is hysterical... it's a story he'll be able to tell for a long time!
Too funny!! I am glad he will be home soon!!
That is so awesome michelle. He must have been thrilled to get the right autograph. My husband is a big fan too and I'm going to have to show him this.
I'm excited for you and your family that he'll be home soon.
How neat to have met these people. FYI- my brother looks EXACTLY like Kid Rock! Man...Robin Williams is getting very old!
That's so cool!
That is a funny and neat story! What a wonderful picture and memories to have!!!!
That's too funny. He dissed Robin Williams. I ought to send him a letter on some sort of official looking letterhead saying the USO has received a complaint about him hurting a celebrity's feelings.
Nah....that'd just be wrong. LOL
God Bless people like Lance and Robin and yeah, even Kid Rock (smile) for going over there and giving Joe and the other troops a reason to laugh and smile that day!
Oh yeah, received your card today. Thank you so very much. It made me smile when I saw it in the mailbox and I'm STILL smiling over it. It's great to get a card (the best gift of all, if you ask me) from a friend.
Merry Christmas!
Kari
How awesome is that?! And absolutely hysterical that he gave Robin Williams the snub. To meet a hero is next best thing to being with family at the holidays.
Ahh, poor Robin Williams! That is pretty funny!
Love that story and I love that these celebrities did this.
It makes me want to support them as they support us.
That's too funny!!
LOL -That is a riot! How lucky for Joe~ he must be incredibly excited. I'm so glad they got to do this!
Yeah!!! That is so great!
I love that celebrities do that. I'm sure it blesses them far more than it blesses the service men and women who get to see them and/or diss them. ;)
LOL! Oh that is too funny!
Geeze Joe! Whatever were you thinking :D
-BTW, i love Robin Williams!
take care Michelle, despite the obvious, i hope you and Kayla have a wonderful Christmas at home (and of course I hope Joe does away too!)
xxoo
What a funny memory for Joe! And possibly a little embarrassing too :)
But at least he has a autograph from Lance to show for it!! ( you like how I throw the name "Lance" around -like we're old friends or something... :)
He looks good Michelle! Must have been nice to get a picture of him... I know with Daniel every picture I got I stared at forever! He sent a lot, and videos too, but I always felt like a desert soaking up water whenever I got one.
-Andrea
What a great story - and I'm so glad that Joe had something special happen while he's overseas!
What a combination of celebrities!
Too funny about Robin Williams.
That's soo funny. Too bad he still wasn't able to get Lance's autograph. At least he got to see him up close. I have to agree that it was a weird combination of celebs. Still, pretty cool.
I meant too bad he couldn't get both... oopsie.
What a treat for your hubby and the troops! I miss visiting your blog and will have to make it one of my daily stops.
*snort* Oh, how I laughed reading this. I bet Joe even blushed a little too. Oops! Thanks for sending his address. My card will be late, but I wanted to write him a note too. I don't think he'll mind though.
Hope you three are doing well!
What a funny story and a great picture!
That is hilarious I love it!
My brothers wife used to work for Race Face and yea I too can't believe the cost of some of these bikes!
That's hilarious! I bet Robin Williams was shocked to be dissed :)
LOVE the picture.
Hilarious!
P.S. I think Miss USA should have taken off her sunglasses. Sheesh.
That is so hallarious I would have loved an autograph from Robin Williams definately over Lance Armstrong, it must be a bike thing LOLOLO
What a cool picture I love it!!! What a neat surprise for Joe and the troop.
Merry Christmas Michelle to you and your two babies.
That is hilarious!! I had my husband read and he laughed his butt off!!!
That's so AWESOME! Thanks for posting the picture. Great story too. ;) I hope he got our christmas card.
I'm sure he was mortified, but really, if they were rushing them all around like that, I'm sure Robin Williams understood - he's a nice man.
Great photo!
Merry Christmas, Michelle, to you and your family.
I just watched a news report about this. They showed alot of people and I saw one guy that had a nice smile like your Joe but I doubt it was actually him LOL I thought it was funny. I was all like "HEY I just read about this."
That is very exciting. My husband would have been torn. He is a huge fan of both of them.
That is so funny! LOL I am so happy that awesome things like this happen for our soldiers!
How cool is that??? That picture is awesome. What a keepsake. That is too funny about him ditzing Robin Williams...who by the way looks very skinny - or moreso than I remembered....
So neat though!
Have a Merry Christmas. (I did get a card off to Joe...)
Dana
What fun and how exciting! What a great group...Robin Williams is a favorite of mine and Bill LOVES Lewis Black. But Bill is a huge Lance fan too so would have SO wanted to meet him. Go JOE!
I am so glad your Sister and Mom are there with you. How special for them and for you. Kayla is so excited I know!
Hugs to you and sweet Kayla.
Take care of yourself now...2008 will be an extra special year for you all.
Hugs,
Sue
