Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Right? Well maybe not in this case!

Last night Kayla was in the hallway with a small, blow-up beach ball. Something happened, not sure what as I didn't see it, but I heard Kayla's fake cry. Maybe the ball got in her way, or she tripped on it, or it wasn't cooperating, who knows!

The next thing I know is she is coming around the corner carrying the ball in one hand, sort of yelling at it, all the while shaking her finger at it. All I could make out was Kayla saying "ah you!" every few seconds.

I asked her, "Kayla are you mad at the ball?"

She responded with an emphatic, "I mad!" - and a bob of the head for extra dramatics.

Then! Oh then she carries the ball over to the corner in the living room that is her naughty spot when she's in trouble for doing something, or not doing something.

She is still yelling at the ball and pointing her finger at it and now she keeps saying something like "ah spot!" which I figured she was telling the ball it had to sit in the naughty spot.

Oh with the finger pointing too! She put the ball in the corner, and while pointing/shaking her finger she told the ball "4 minutes!" and went to the kitchen to get the timer. I gave her the timer and set it for 4 minutes. She made sure the ball knew it had to sit there for "4 minutes!" and don't you know she stayed there watching the ball and making sure it sat there until the timer went off.

I looked at Joe and asked him, "are we really like that to her when she has to sit in the naughty spot?" I hoped we weren't that bad with the finger pointing and raising of voices!

I guess we do point our finger at her when we first put her in the corner while telling her "now you have to sit there in the naughty spot for 4 minutes because you were doing ...." but we don't sit there and continuously point/shake our finger at her the whole time; and we leave her alone while she's there because she doesn't make any attempt to get out of the corner...she knows to sit there until she hears the timer going off.

So I think Kayla went a little overboard with the dramatics yesterday, but it did make me think how seeing her imitate, to a point, what happens when she has to sit in the naughty spot.

But it was so hysterical seeing her disciplining the ball! I wish I had thought to catch it on video!

Too cute Michelle! We've had the same make believe happen with Emma and her spanking spoon on her dollie's bottom's. She even walks through the pre-spanking and post-spanking talks with them, complete with hugs and kisses and making them hug her baby sister! It really is a good mirror though for our level of calm, or lack thereof, in the midst of a disciplining event. "From the mouths of babes!"
Love, Sarah

Oh cute. She was just teaching the ball to behave, like all good mommies do!

That is so cute. I recall my girls disciplining dolls, stuffed animals, etc,... Even making them sit in the time out chair with them at times. Kids do learn by watching! Hug!

How precious! It's moments like those that let us know how good life really is! What a cute/silly/precious/lovable lil' dollbaby you have!

My kids all went through that phase. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was humbling.

Cute story, I am wondering what that ball did though!

That is just too cute - you meanies you!

yeah....sometimes it is really hard to see what their perception is. I do believe that they tend to exaggerate though, so try not to take it too personal. :)

That is so funny! Just wait till you have another child in the house! We watch Christopher "correct" Matthew in much the same way he is corrected all of the time... It has helped us "see" ways we can improve, especially in the tone and sound of our voices.

Oh the drama, mama! Sophia "corrects" her dolls alllll the time with her time out chair. I guess I should be happy that she's at least getting it, right? ;)

I can just picture Kayla and her finger pointing drama. How funny! It does make you stop and think sometimes doesn't it? Every once in a while, I catch myself trying to envision how I'm coming across either too mean or too sappy, either one. I was so glad to hear you all got a special get-away together before Joe deploys and our family has already started praying for his safety specifically. One of our church members also leaves this month on his second tour so whenever we think of one, we also pray for the other. Have a great day!

That's is adorable, I would love to catch my son "unknowingly" of course imitate how he thinks a discipline should go.. he always pouty lips his way out of it as it is...

OMgoodness! That sounds SO funny! Kallie disciplines her groovy girls ALL the time! It cracks me up!

Wow! Imitation is scaring at times. W.W,'s current thing is he points his finger at you and then next to him and says SIT DOWN! in a very loud voice. All I can think of is the number of times I've told him to sit down in the grocery cart, on the couch, on the floor, etc. etc. etc. Just like you, I think, do I really sound like that when I tell him to sit down? ; )

That is adorable! It's a good thing she stood there and made sure ball didn't try to escape...if I was ball, I may have tried to make a run- or, uh, roll- for it! LOL

Cute Kayla, just wait to see how she will bos her little baby sibling around :-)

This is too funny!

Snuggle Bug imitates us constantly too. His favorite phrase is "Not nice! Say sorry!" He says it in a stern voice, just like we do. :)

Aren't they fun at this age?

Too funny! A video would have been priceless! Kids are so awesome, aren't they.

That is funny--I think all kids over-exagerate their disciplining. My son used to throw a doll down, and exclaim, "Be goo(d), or else." I certainly never said that to him. She's a sweetie.

Tammy said...

*Laughing*

I'm sure she has a flare for the "dramatic"!!

In any case, you've got to let her know you mean what you say...teehee!!
She was just "exagerating"!!

Ya'll are great with her I've seen this first hand!
:)

Very sweet Michelle! She seems very comical....

Oh yes, been there before. My daughter was always having her babies and stuffed animals in the corners.

Maybe you can keep the video camera close in hopes she'll do it again!

How are you feeling Michelle? Praying for all of you right now. Joe is leaving soon, right?

Hilarious, Michelle!

Hey, can you email me privately? I am wondering how potty training went for you with Kayla?

Shannon @ Gabi's World said...

LOL- I am sorry to laugh, but that was too funny! Gabi does the same thing, but meaner, too! It's funny because I often think "Am I that mean?" Too funny that we go through that same stuff.

Love it! Funny girl!

Jack's big thing is making everyone go 'nightnight.' He goes through the whole spill from start to finish. I just wrote about it today!

He even pointed a little finger at us yesterday and (gently) said, "Lay down." I honestly can't remember doing that! But I guess I have at some point...

Aren't they great?

DeAnna said...

Oh my, how cute is she?! I would have had the hardest time from bursting out in laughter. Isabella imitates us too and I agree, she always sounds much worse than what I think we sound like. :) Our problem is that she thinks she's in charge of her little sister. :)

Miss E goes to the corner for no reason at all, or when her brother is standing there....she joins him.

She is also very good at the fake cry.

I can just see Kayla in the corner talking to her ball.
