Time Travel Tuesday

Today we are traveling to the first day of school. Annie asks, "Do you remember your first day of school? Maybe your first child's first day of school was a memorable day. Did you cry? Did they?"

I don't have any really memorable first day of school stories for myself. I do remember my first day of 9th grade in Germany. The school seemed so huge to me ... 2 stories (well 3 really since there were classes in the basement). I worried how I was going to find my locker, my classes - and make it to each one before the bell rang! I worried if anyone would talk to me, if I would find anyone to sit with at lunch (and it didn't help that I was shy!) First days at new schools are hard, but obviously I survived!

It's fitting that Annie is asking about first days of school today as this is Kayla's first day back to preschool too! This was her first day last year when I picked her up. She did fine that first day, I think because it was all so chaotic and she didn't know what to expect or what was happening really. She didn't cry, just went off to play. But over the next few days she did cry when I would drop her off at school (and stop once they were in the classroom.) All of that stopped when she started taking the school bus...she LOVED the bus and didn't cry once!

I think it'll be a little bit of an adjustment this year. Kayla is 4 now and the 4-year olds go to preschool in the afternoon (12-3). Up until Saturday Kayla still took a nap around 1:30. Yes I know most 4 year olds aren't napping anymore, but she didn't seem to be "weaning" herself from a nap - she would just go right to sleep when I put her down. So we'll see how this goes!

This is her on the first day this year (look at how much she's changed compared to the above picture!) I can see the changes in her face that she looks older; which of course she is, but still!

On our way out the door - she was so excited saying "yay school!" (she really wanted to ride the bus, but I wanted to take her on the first day!)

Hanging up her backpack - she seemed to remember the whole routine.

They color while everyone has a chance to go to the bathroom and then they head out to lunch. She sent me off with a big hug, kiss, "bye mommy! bye bye!" and blew me kisses as I walked out the door.

Heading down the hallway on their way to lunch.

She knew I was in the hallway and kept turning around to wave at me and say "bye mommy!"

It wasn't as chaotic today as I thought it would be (I was the only parent who came in the room) and there were only 5 kids (8 are registered though). They started out with 4 on the first day last year but ended up with 14-16 by the end of the year.

She'll start taking the bus on Friday and I know she is so excited!

My daughter was so used to going to pre-school since I had to work, that she was a veteran by kindergarten. She was amazed at the others who cried for their moms.

She is adorable, and looks like she just enjoys school so much. What a blessing. Izzy doesn't say she likes school, but she tells me with her actions. I'm glad she enjoys the other kids. Thanks for your sweet comments!

I love the pictures! What an exciting day! I always loved taking the bus too. Made me feel grown-up, for some reason! It looks like a wonderful school.

I remember not really being able to sleep the night before the first day of school because of nerves and excitement.

I hope Kayla has a fantastic year at school!

Aww how cute! It looks like she's going to absolutley love it. :)

The only thing I really remember about my first day at school was that I already knew everyone!! I lived in the middle of nowhere and went to school of less that 30 farmer's kids. :) It my most favourite school memories. :)

Oh thank you for sharing that. My Brenna is a four year old who still naps like a champ! I've hated to consider giving it up, since that afternoon break is nice for mommies! I think when she starts preschool in September, they start weaning naps. I'm not exactly sure yet how it works.

Great pictures - looks like it went really well.

Oh my, she does look older! I', so happy to see all the pictures today Michelle! And how cool that they get to hang their belongings up with their name on a giraffe ;o)!

Are you enjoying a little bit of free time or are you missing her terribly? probably a little of both, huh?

She's getting so big! Hope the nap timing works out for her. How are you feeling lately?

So fun to read, Michelle! Glad her first day went so well.

My oldest daughter did not stop taking naps until she was six! Before we started home schooling, she went to morning Kindergarten, and would come and just crash every day afterwards. But my youngest stopped her naps right before she turned 4. :)

She looks so cute. I love the picture where she was turning around and saying bye to you. How sweet! Although Isabella would like for me to send her to preschool, we are doing that here at home. She would have no problem whatsoever. She's already told me "I want to ride a school bus and go to school --- you'll be fine mommy."

How cute! I cried on my daughter's first day of school. She was in third grade! (We homeschooled until then.)

Glad Kayla loves school.

When my 4-year old goes to kindergarten next year, he wants me to stay in the parking lot.

"Why?" I asked.

"So I won't be scared," he said.

"What'll I do in the parking lot?" I asked.

My 4-year old looked at me and said, "Sit in the van, close your eyes then snore."

Oh how cute. I can definitely see how much she's changed! It's also making me cry thinking of Kayla's first day in under 3 weeks.

I love how she's like, "See ya Mom". :)

Good luck with her nap change. The way I see it - the longer they nap the better. :)

Awwww, bittersweet! She really has changed alot in the 2 pictures. Hope she'll adjust okay without the afternoon nap. :o)

So cute, the way she kept turning around to tell you bye. She looks like an old pro in these photos. I remember last year when it was all so new to her. Boy, what a difference a year makes!

Oh I am sooo glad that it went well for you and Kayla! Maybe no nap will mean an earlier bedtime :) When my little one son stopped napping, he would be asleep by 7pm - it was superb! We also did something called quiet hour, one hour where he could rest either late morning or afternoon by reading books on his bed etc.
So glad it went well :)

I always love to hear about good first days! I taught pre-school for quite awhile and also worked in the elementary schools in various states.

LOVE the kids...

Tell Kayla that I send love and congratulations on being such a grown up girl! Happy school year!

Sue

Kayla is really grown since I first came across your blog site. She's a beautiful little girl and is going to be the best big sister.

I do remember first days for me going to school and my children too.

My Mom took me to school (we lived in a small town) she went south to mail a letter and I took off north,I was setting on the porch when she got home.

Both of my kids love school and the BIG bus picking them up. I watched my son get on the bus(he looked so small) I cried all the way back to the house and all day.He was fine. 51/2 years I did the same with my daughter. I think it was even worse for me when my twin granddaughters started school.

You and Kayla have wonderful week-end talking about what she learned in school.

{{HUGS}} and God bless
