Being in a military family I've been the lucky recipient of some wonderful gifts from other countries.
When my brother was in Japan he brought this beautiful vase back for me:
Then when he was in Turkey he brought this back. I don't remember what it's called, but he also had one made for our dad, our mom, and both sets of grandparents.
I have two cartouches. One my brother sent from Turkey and the other my father-in-law sent from Kuwait. They have my name in English on one side and then in Hebrew and Arabic (I think!) on the other.
When Joe was in Korea he sent me this "rice necklace." It has my name written in English on one side and in Korean on the other - this is done on a single grain of rice! Then it's put into this tube of water and you can have the water colored to whatever color you want - mine is purple of course!

I love those treasures! My dad was in the military as well, so we have lots of things he brought or sent to us. Most of them are at my mom's house (even if they are mine) One thing that I'm excited about this year is that my dad had bought me a little outfit from Japan when I was 2. Its not an everyday outfit (its made of extremely thin material), but I thought I would let Isabella wear it for Halloween. I remember when my dad was overseas that he would tell us on the phone that he sent us a package and we would be so excited to wait for the package and see what presents we got. Made the time away from him go by a little quicker. I'll have to remember to share some of them as my treasure as well some Tuesday.

Those are certainly wonderful treasures to have...I had never heard of "cartouches" so how very fascinating to learn about them! I love the vase, it's gorgeous!!

I have one of those rice necklaces too - I got it from a student a few years ago - and mine's purple too!
My sailor bought me a "rice necklace" two years ago, with blue water and both our names on it with a heart. I truly treasure it.
