The only one?

Do you ever feel like sometimes when your child does something that you are the only one in the world who has a child that does that?

I took Kayla for another hair cut on Monday. She's probably only gone 3 or 4 times total and it's always been for a little trim. Each time I take her I know it's not "easy" because she doesn't sit still and she likes to look behind her to see what the stylist is doing.

I decided to get her hair cut about shoulder-length, it's just too much to take care of as long as it is right now - especially when she hates for you to brush it!

She did so-so while getting her bangs trimmed. I knelt in front of her and she brushed my hair to keep her occupied. I brought her doll so she could do the same with her.

Then she started cutting the back of her hair and Kayla just would not be still. Turning one way then the other. Wouldn't keep her head straight, wouldn't sit, wouldn't look down. The stylist wanted her to stand up on the chair facing backwards so she could even out the back. I thought that would be ok because there is a full length mirror and Kayla could watch herself. Not happening. Everytime I tried to stand her up she said "no no no" and went limp like a wet noodle. So I tried sitting in the chair with her on my lap and THEN she wanted to stand up and look in that mirror. Tried that but she wouldn't stand still enough for the lady to even tell if it was even.

At that moment I had a vision that 2 & 3 year olds everywhere were sitting nice and still while getting their hair cut and it was only my child who wouldn't. It's like it is physically impossible for this child to be still for 5 minutes!

As far as I'm aware there aren't any "kid-friendly" type salons in this town...so no fun area with a small tv at each station showing movies to keep the little ones still.

So someone, anyone, please humor me and tell me you've had a hair cutting experience such as this and there is another child out there who wouldn't sit still.

Michelle, have you thought about bringing your computer and have Kayla watch movies while getting her hair cut? Just wondering.. I can not remember you or Michael going thru any of that... I just do not remember!! :( For your sister, Kellina, she had her blankie to suck on so she probably sat very still..So... Is the back of Kayla's hair even or not? :) love mom

So not the only one! But Matthew goes into a huge meltdown and is struggling and crying the whole time. I am trying to give him little haircuts each day (one snip) to get him more used to it. It's all I know to do. He'll let me do one snip and that's it. But at least we're up to one snip without the meltdown...
Hum.. will have to try bringing his burpie for him to love though...

My grandson who is 3 now cried and would not hold still for haicuts, finally he has started to like them...or maybe its the toy we bribe him with after the haircut! Your little girl is absolutely adorable!

LOL, my daughter loved hair cuts. But her brother, my middle child hated them until he was 3 or 4. Until then it was a nightmare, I'd hold him in my lap, often standing up while the stylist snipped as fast as possible. Nicky, 3.5, was very good until recently, the last haircut wasn't too bad mostly because th stylist was very fast. I think there is a sensory issue with the hair falling in faces.

I think I've told you about how bad Nate used to be with haircuts... It was so bad that we used to just buzz his whole head, but then daddy nicked his ear with the electric clipper and so we thought we'd let grandma give him haircuts. This worked once or twice, but then he thought he could get away with more with Grandma and started squirming like crazy one day and she ended up cutting his ear by accident too. HOWEVER!!! Ever since then, he's so afraid of getting his ear cut that he is an angel for stylists now and they say so after every haircut. He even flirts with the ladies. Hahaha!!

can not say that i have had theexperience yet, but vincent has a wild looking hairdo (think david beckham) and with all the energy he has at 6 weeks, i am convinced we will fight the same battle soon :-)
a friend of mine had her boy's hair cut half a side on one day and the other the next day. that was the only way to get it done.
how did kayla's hair turn out in the end?

Oh, a comment about this post.

Snuggle Bug has had 2 hair cuts in the past 18 months. The first one was a horrible experience. He was terrified (who wouldn't be with a stranger approaching you with a sharp metal object?) and he cried and tried to get away the whole time. We had to pin him to us to get the trim done. It was not good.

The 2nd haircut was much better. We took him to the stylist that used to do Oronzo's hair when he was a little boy. This lady is great with kids! The first thing she did was hand him 2 small combs to keep each of his hands occupied. She chattered with him nearly the whole time and she cut his hair quick as lightening. I think it took all of 10 minutes!

Thanks for all the responses letting me know I was alone in the hair cut fiasco!

So in the end her hair is just past her shoulders. I know it's totally even or straight, but it's not butchered so you can tell just by looking at it! I probably can tell because I'm looking for it! It's just subtle enough so when I'm combing it or putting it up I can see a bit of a difference, same with the bangs. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now...at least not until she'll sit still enough!

hehe only the rare toddler sits still! We however have Becca sit on our laps while they cut her hair. Don't know if it would help but worth a try?!?!

I so KWYM I absolutley dread the haircuts for Tristan but I can't stand his hair looking uncared for. I have no idea what chanelle would do she has never had her hair cut except for a bit of trimming done by me. I actually talked my Mom into taking him last time and all she said was *Now i know why you had me take him* and his hair is so crooked I wanted to cry but just laughed instead. I hate that they make comments implying he behaves this way because he has T21. At least i can take him I would never have attempted taking my drama queen at age 2 she would have gotten so upset she prolly would have vomitted on the stylist. You are so not alone :) If I had a laptop Id bring the wiggles along that might help.

My nephew's barber quit halfway through a haircut because the meltdown was so bad. A neighbor who is a beautician sneaks up on him to cut his hair. Really.

I can't wait to see pics of the attempt! :) She needs a "big sis" to model for her. I think that's why T does MOST of what she does, she wants to be like Darrah!

Callum used to be great at getting his hair cut, he'd sit on my knee and watch what was going on. Ahh, those were the days!

Now it's a huge struggle, he bucks, shakes his head, cries, everything BUT sit still. Next time I'm contemplating the portable DVD player!

As a Hairstylist i have yet to come across any child under the age of 16 to sit still while getting their hair cut, and sadly I havn't found anything to hold their attention long enough to cut their hair. I just gave Shaylee a trim today and she wails and shakes her head. I guess kids just hate to get their hair cut!

I laughed when I saw how many comments this post received! I have already been too afraid to take Kit for his first hair cut (no child friendly ones here that I know of either) and this hasn't helped! Poor old Hannah doesn't have enough yet but some day ...
